Wanted 10,000 Watt Generator
« on: June 19, 2013, 07:17:57 PM »
Wanted a 10,000 watt 110/240v single phase generator to run welders at Bonneville.

Anybody knowing where there is one sitting not being used it will help us all at Bonneville. It will be used to run the Courtesy Welders supplied by Miller Electric.
It is the last piece of the puzzle we need yet.

I would check with military surplus suppliers, they often have very large diesel powered gen sets for sale.

Might have to rent one out of Salt Lake City from an equipment rental company. I would work them for a donation of partial donation of the machine. Or get miller to send one of their generator welders they make. Surely there is a Miller dealer in SLC perhaps they have a trade-in they would loan to assists Miller in their promotion on the Salt.

A couple of years ago the Ohio State team rented a large generator for their EV attempts.  They got it from a dealer in SLC and left it on the salt when they departed so another racer could return it to the city.

Since OSU will be out there this year for the Shootout -- maybe they'll again be renting a generator, and maybe they'd be will to work with you to share the cost, or have you fetch it for SpeedWeek and leave it in Wendover for their use at the Shootout, or something.  You might be able to reduce or eliminate any cost to you by working with the team and the vendor.  Good luck.

Burton...you sure you need 10,000 watts? Both welders claim plug in to 115 or 230 VAC

  My Genrerac 7000 watt -12,250 surge watts has 2 regular 115 v 20 amp plugs, a 3 prong twist 115v 30 amp plug and a 4 prong 120/240 v 30 amp plug.

Bought at home Depot 10 years ago for $1076 with tax :-D  Troy used to be a rep for them and they have pressure oiling. Can't believe Linda could look and find it in her records. Think I'm in trouble :-P

Hoping to run the 180 tig off this generator but better check with Miller before I buy.

A Miller Bobcat 225 portable would give you more than enough power and also give you power to run tools such as drills and grinders as well with either 120 or 230 Volts.

Peter, are you above the flood?

I wish the best for the citizens of Calgary.

I'm well above the flood. I don't know if you're familiar with where Les used to live but I'm just a couple of blocks from there, up on the hill above his old shop.

I'm fortunate. I've never seen water that powerful. It got higher than you could ever imagine if you had seen it at the normal level. A lot of people lost a lot because there was very little warning.

Thanks for the good wishes. There are a lot of people in this province that need all the good wishes and prayers that can be provided.

6000-6500 watt is what we need for the welders.
Anyone having a spare one laying around let me know. I will buy it for a reasonable amount of $$
Thanks

Peter, so glad you are OK, we had a flood here in 2004 and we were lucky as well to be on the high side of the river. Water has such awesome power, it took out 24 houses. I tried to send you a email but it bounced, guess the power was down.
