Gauge preferences (oil pressure, oil temp, water temp)???
« on: June 14, 2013, 02:57:11 PM »
I need to buy some gauges for my H/DT project.  I'm looking for a mechanical oil pressure, oil temperature, and water temperature gauge.  For the oil pressure, I'd prefer AN fittings.

Suggestions?

"Sorry! There is already an attachment with the same filename as the one you tried to upload. Please rename the file and try again. "

This is getting to be an annoying problem. I tried to post a reply and include a photo but I received the above message. Maybe sometime in the past I posted it in my build diary but does that disqualify the photo from being posted in another subject forum?

I then tried to post my message without the photo and then received the usual "you've already posted this message, etc."

I used electrical. No hose or tubes to break or fittings to leak and spray oil or other fluids all over the drivers compartment.

Yep, good advice right there.
Set up a big idiot light on the oil pressure with an adjustable sender so you get an early warning if there is a problem. You don't have time to look at gauges on a run.

Buy a recording device, save a lot of money by getting a flat aluminum panel and drawing gauges on them with the needles where you want them. Red needles are a nice touch. My wife told me this when my son and were unable to say what they read going through the lights....  :-o

Here is an old picture showing how I placed my SW instruments. In final assembly the gauges will be rotated so that normal operation will have the needles pointed straight up. That way you don't have to actually read them, just see if all are vertical.

Excellent idea Neil!!   BTW guys, that's how pro teams do it with gauges.   BUT, they also use data loggers . . . . .  not because engineers don't trust drivers, well, yeah, engineers don't trust drivers . . . . . . . .

Interesting - the difference between race car/bike drivers and semi truck drivers.  Few gauges for the racers, and trucks -- well, it's pretty common to see an add for a truck stating stuff like engine, transmission, and "this one has all the gauges!".  Like 15 or 18 of 'em.  Lots of stuff to look at.  Ford's trucks used to have all the gauges set to read normal at the 3 o'clock position.

What else is there to do in a long haul truck? Drink coffee, text, and read gauges. Not much time to get bored in a Salt car. Crew chief looks at the important stuff before he closes the canopy and I look at the tach and try to avoid the mile posts and turn-out markers.

Forgot...The most important one is a EGT on your hottest exhaust port right where you can see it. All othere guages should be liquid filled....Good Luck

T-man is hooking me up with the gauges!  It's great to have helpful vendors involved in the project....
