Diesel fuel systems - shutoff valve locations?
« on: June 11, 2013, 12:14:23 PM »
Rule 3.I.3 - Diesel engines with mechanical injectors shall be equipped with a shut-off valve that will eliminate the fuel supply.

Any ideas on this rule?  My diesel injection pump has an electrical solenoid shut-off valve as part of its OEM design.

I suspect the intent of the rule is to require an additional valve in the fuel line in order to positively shut-off the flow of fuel in the event that the OEM design fails.

I'm looking for ideas how this requirement has been met by other competitors.  I could install a ball valve immediately after the fuel cell (located in the bed of the truck), or very near the injection pump (which would require opening the hood to access the valve).

Your thoughts and suggestions are appreciated.

Run a cable to the ball valve handle. That's how we did it in the '60s on our dragsters.

Does the solenoid fail safe, that is does it close with no electrical power to it. Is the primary fuel pump electric?

Cap'n - yes, it's a "normally closed" solenoid.  There is no fuel flow if it's not receiving 12V to the solenoid, which is mounted directly on the injection pump.

I will be using a low pressure electric fuel pump to supply approximately 5 psi of fuel to the injection pump.  The factory doesn't use this arrangement, but I'm going to.

I'll ask the SCTA official is the OEM solenoid is sufficient to meet the requirements of the rule.

That's what I get for thinking.  I was thinking that they would want to see something like the equivalent of a battery shut-off switch, but for the fuel flow.

Steve, here are some ideas to consider. 1, an inertia switch to shut off the pump and solenoid valve in the event of a "mishap", 2, a large emergency stop " panic" button that kills power to everything.
We have both on our camaro. Ask SCTA tech about them.

Good idea on both counts.  I know that the Ford rollover/impact sensors are fairly easy to adapt for the purposes of shutting off the electric fuel pump, and could also be wired to close the injection pump solenoid.  A big red "Mushroom" type E-stop button is also an excellent idea for shutting down all electrical functions from the driver's seat.

Steve, we use a fuel pump switch for a '90 ford escort. The part # from Advance auto is SW4177. they went up since I got 2 of them. Ours is mounted near the shifter as it has a reset on it.They are about 50.00. or you could hunt a part yard. It would be mounted on the rear pass. side wheel house. near the top.

If you get one from a junk yard be sure to get the pig tail thats attached to it. The plug is important part of it.
