Inflatable bail off vests.
« on: May 31, 2013, 05:53:57 PM »
These lanyard activated bail off vests have been getting some press in our area, and the idea of old important bones being pillowed upon landing appeals to me. Does anyone see any rule being tested by wearing one?

The vest only resembles Bibendum when lanyard has been pulled and air canister triggered. Simply looking to see if anyone sees a possible rule conflict with this type of device.

Aero Rule 1... don't have a lot of loose crap flapping in the breeze... it will slow you down, of course that rule is  only important if you want to set a record.

An early adopter of this rule would be Rollie Free, right?

I don't presume to know the rules........interpret the rules.......or abide by the rules...........I just can't see how this would be practical for a land-speed racer.  If it fits under your leathers, they are too loose.  If it fits over your leathers, its a drag and probably dangerous. If you hit the salt at speed before or after the lanyard detaches and "instantly" fills the vest, it will drag (snatch or catch) on the salt and probably cause more damage than sliding on your leathers. Broken bones are a lot easier to repair than detached body parts

They do have a race suit version that has less things that could flap. Last weekends MotoGP crash recorded multiple 25G plus impacts from a get off at 209 mph. The inflatable race suits are working but simply too expensive for me.

They seem like a good idea.  The back and neck stabilization and protection are benefits.  My plan is to watch the road race guys close and see if there are any problems.  I will get one before I go to AUS and wear it there, if they work OK.

Usually those guys do a little tumble and slide, get up and walk away, did the suit increase the g forces and cause excess flopping?  :-o  :|

Hi Stainless
Having seen the vid's online I would say it was the impact with the wall, and the gravel trap.
Aplinestars say their datalogging only goes to 25G any there were at least 4 impacts over the max  :-D

The electronics and CO2 canister are in the speed hump, and they use burstable stiching to allow for suit expansion (thinks of folding a piece of suit into a concertina effect, but with weak stiching)

Marc Marquez states that when he went over the hump on the sart/finish strait the front end went light at the braking point, so the front wheel locked, and he was then on and unguided missile heading for the wall, so he stepped off

For racing on the salt, I'm not 100% convinced, as apart from Slim's miles markers theres nothing solid to hit other than your machine
Old enough to know better, but too interested in speed to care

12V car batteries & timing lights make a pretty good dent in things at speed.

Bumping this older thread. A couple of us are bring tethered inflatable vests this year and a couple of inquieries have been made to the big cheeses about any possible conflict of interest between protective leather and use of of the vests.

While I am biased about their ability to add protection in a unplanned dismount, can anyone think of a situation where they might be a problem?

I'm pretty sure SCTA and USFRA don't use car batteries.
