Weather conditions in midwest
« on: May 20, 2013, 07:09:51 PM »
We are thinking and praying for those in the major storms going through the country. There is no place safe anywhere as storms, fires, floods, earhtquakes can happen anytime. Hoping our LSR people are safe as well as all others. We are going to update our energency supplies here just in case something happens. Be safe.

You're right about bad natural stuff happening to anyone, anywhere.  We're fortunate way up here -- in that we seldom have any bad weather stuff other than blizzards.  Tornadoes are very rare, and even a big hailstorm is a once in 10 or more years thing.  And as for keeping a safety net of supplies -- I've got a full tank of fuel, marked and reserved and secure, for our generator - which is big enough to run the whole house, including the pump and the deep freezers as well as the boiler that heats with wood - so blizzards are inconvenient to us and that's about it.  Earthquakes are not much of a possibility up here on the Laurentian Shield -- where the rock has been solid and unmoving for billions of years.  That's why they built Project Seafarer - the radio antenna system for underwater submarines - here -- the rock was so hard and unbroken.

But that doesn't mean we don't worry about our friends and relatives that are in harm's way when the weather turns sour or when there's an earthquake.  Stay ready and take heart that we're here to help you if you need it.

I was just thinking about the folks at Stroud - I think they're on the south side of OC.

Joe, I suppose you think that it's a bad thing to have snow so much as we do.  But then there's our way of looking at the cold and snow -- it keeps out the riff-raff.

Joe, he's got a point - the riff-raff can't escape if they're burried under snow . . .

Unh, Chris, I think you know better.  The concept of the bad guys (and bad girls, for that matter, although sometimes bad girls aren't all that bad, but that's another topic) not being able to leave isn't what I meant.  $250 fancy gym shoes don't work well in 2-foot-deep snow, and lots of gold chains and big piercings are really uncomfortable at -20F when the ind is blowing at 30 mph.

Okay, enough goofiness for now.  Big, bad weather in Oklahoma and other nearby states overnight.  All kidding aside -- those storms must have been absolutely terrifying.  Best wishes to all that witnessed them - and condolences to the many that lost all - or lost relatives and friends.

We had a good talk of weather last night in the chat. I have survived flood (SD), tornados (ND and Eastern SD) and dodged fire here in the Black Hills. ANY part of the country can have its issues and if you have gone through a major event you can certainly sympathize with the Okies right now.
