FWD Streamliner Suspension Setup
« on: May 18, 2013, 10:31:46 PM »
Hi there everyone

I'm in the process of starting to build an FWD streamliner and was wondering what would be the best setup for the front suspension.
The thinks I'm look at are Camber, caster, ackerman angle or not. Would love to now what you guys have used are what you think

Thanks David

I would start by trying to understand why zero scrub radius and zero caster might be very important as well as a TORSEN center section.

I'm interested in this topic.
I haven't built a streamliner yet, but have built a handful of successful FWD racecars, including two Production Supercharged FWD cars that were almost stock, chassis-wise, and were very driveable and stable up to 230 mph (so far). I expect our current car, which weighs 3400 on the starting line, will eclipse 250 mph, with exclusively OEM suspension components, aside from  adjustable coilover damper units.
And, an open diff.

Sparky,
Our Volkswagen Passat's front suspension currently has zero scrub radius.

The caster setting is eight degrees positive at the moment.

It looks roughly like this attached photo.

VWP, Are the adjustable coil over damper units on the steering or the suspension. If on the steering would you please explain.
Thanks Richard

Just curious, are you running stock height tires and stock caster?  Taller tires and/or more caster will move it out.  Did the car have zero scrub to start with or have you made changes to get it to zero?

Thanks,

Sum

Sorry, Dampers='Shocks'. Coilover shocks.

The tires we run range between 24" and 26" diameter, which is in the range of the OEM tires the manufacturer has used with the same components we use. Depending on wheel offset options, the scrub radius can vary between +10mm to -10mm, depending on the wheel offset.

The stock caster setting is around seven degrees.
