Tires
« on: May 14, 2013, 11:04:29 PM »
Hi all, first time post and racer here. Trying to get it together for Maine. 64 Pontiac wagon needs tires for the street class and soon up to 150 mph. Can I get some brand names or current use tires that are V Rated in the 225/75r. X15 wheel size or your helpful suggestions. wheel width is 7".
Thanks all.

Firestone makes or at least did make a V-rated Firehawk in a 225/70/15.

That Firestone tire I believe is no longer available. Last time I looked at their web site only a 16" tire is available.

It looks like you are correct.

I do have a well used set left.

I'm the OP and confused by the rule book(pg 12) on this matter. The cover page for Street class says tires must be rated for 135mph, however the rulebook lists tire speed ratings and the speeds the tires can run which are all higher than the speed rating per the tire manufacturers.
eg an H rated tire is a 130 mph tire according to published speed ratings by tire Mfg but LTA allows higher speeds?

Check www.tirerack.com. It's a great site that lets you search by everything, including speed rating. I bought a set of W-rated Kumhos (good to up to 168 mph) for the April event in Wilmington for about $85 apiece. That was obviously way more tire than I needed for the 115 mph I ended up running in my HHR, but hey, for $85, why not?
LTA   G/BGALT Record (1 mile)     143.313
LTA   G/BGALT Record (1.5 mile)  148.321
LTA   F/PRO Record (1 mile)         114.668

It's a lot better to have a tire that's rated for a lot faster than you plan to run than one that's rated for less than you plan to run.
