blocked radiator in Classic or Production class?
« on: May 04, 2013, 09:59:16 PM »
I understand the radiator cannot be blocked in the Production class but if running a V6 turbo engine allows room between the water pump and radiator for the water-to-air intercooler how far back from the radiator does the intercooler need to be to be legal and not be considered to be blocking airflow through the radiator?
It would be simpler to not put it inside the passengers compartment.

I didn't look this up in the rule book, but I don't think an air to air or air to water intercooler would be considered as blocking the radiator.

My plan was NOT to put the intercooler up against the rear of the radiator but if I did I'm sure it would be considered "blocking the radiator."  But I could be wrong!

I'm guessing yours is air to water?

Some years ago my friend Gary Williams had the fuel tank between the grill and radiator in his Monza Pro car. And that was OK then. Today i think you are going to have to go with the standard answer. Email Bobby Skyes at sctacoupesandsedans@gmail.com

OK, I'm not a production or classic racer, but generally I understand most of the rules....
The rule is there to keep you from directing the air around the engine compartment instead of through it as the manufacturer intended.  That would give you an aero advantage.  Once the air is through the radiator it does not matter what else you do with it.
OK, that is the way I see it.... lots of folks use intercoolers... now if you are running production and turbo it had to be available from the factory with that combo, you can add intercoolers.
The official word should be obtained from the sanctioning body

I was hoping the sanctioning body would reply, that Dan Warner would have some advice.

It doesn't work that way. Try the link I posted.

My primary advice would be to contact the chairperson of the class committee. You can find the contact info in section 16 of your rulebook. Best advice comes from the 'official' source. A message board answer does not count, even from me. Too many whistle blowers lurking for anyone to put their rep on the line.

Old Stude, let me know if you get an answer.  I'd be considering the same thing on mine.
