Mike Stanton

Mike took over the Chairmanship of the Speed Record Club from me in 2000.  He has been our longest serving Chairman to date.

Before that, as PP has said, Mike supported the club and UK speed record teams in many ways. I was there on the Bonneville salt in 1998 when he presented a delighted Don Vesco (an Honorary Member) with a model of his record holding bike and his life membership card.

Mike was one of the 'blue suits' with Richard 'rocketman' Brown and the Gillette Mach3 Challenger a year later at the same venue and as he took on the role of keeping the bike pristine during down time he was known as 'sammy the chammy' by his fellow team members.  He also wiped the salt from Richard's boots as he got into the cockpit.

We will miss you Mike and condolences to Rosemary who shared his many trips to Bonneville.

Malcolm

ps 'Chammy' comes from the drying off chamois leather body wipe.

I just heard that Mike Stanton, the former chairman of the Speed Record Club in the UK passed away at Easter after a long battle with the big "C". He was a gentle man who supported lots of speed projects, and continued to pursue his interests on his retirement. To say he will be sadly missed is an understatement.
