Leathers, 1-piece or 2-piece?
« on: March 29, 2013, 05:52:19 PM »
Hi

Am hoping to be at BUB this year with my A-PF 650cc Triumph.

As we are running methanol we'll have nomex under suits on. I'm guessing that for ease of use it would make more sense to have a 2-piece suit?

Am close to getting one made so would appreciate comments and advice.

Thanks

Peter

I would get a 1-piece suit, I have a 2-piece and have never found a good reason to unzip it.

We always wear two-piece suits, although a one-piece would be fine, too.  In retrospect -- I think I would have got the single unit.  But as for underwear we wore Draggin' Jeans (brand) Kevlar long underwear (shirt and pants) for improved abrasion resistance (should we ever end up sliding along on the salt or pavement).  A good upside to the stuff:  It is made of a fairly coarse weave material which was very good at wicking the sweat away - and keeping us really, really cool when it was exposed to the air (i.e. no leather suit on).  We're the ones you may remember seeing walking around in goofy-looking yellow outfits somewhere near the start line.  Goofy - but cool.

The ones I will be getting are made with a Kevlar lining already.

I'll see what they recommend too

A nomex head sock might be a good idea, also.

On the salt flats in August it is hot as all hell.   Sometimes 120* ...  2 piece works a little better and with a metal zipper should provide the same integrity as a one piece suit.

Keeping Joe's comment in mind -- think seriously about getting a light color, not the basic black.  Our silver and white and sky blue leathers were far cooler than those black ones. . . :-) :-)

Lighter colors work a lot better.  My first leathers were Joe Rockets in black and dark blue.  I was stewing in my own juice in them at Bub's.  I went to red and white and a lot better.  I thought about all white but I was concerned that I would look like an Elvis impersonator.

All white leathers are frowned upon just as all white cars. It makes it very hard to find you if you're laying on the salt.

Saw Angelle Savoie / Sampey back in 1985 or so at Boton Rouge points meet and she looked very nice in all white.

Is it ok to have the leathers made with tiny perforations at the front, for a bit of ventilation? They are like 1mm diameter each.

I'm gonna guess it wouldn't have mattered what colors the leathers were.

Thanks Don,

On the basis I might try Speed Week one year I'll leave them out.

Peter,
The 2013 rule changes are listed on the SCTA web site.
There is a change that effects the leathers.
You may want to take a look at it and contact Matt Shuss [chief motorcycle inspector] with any questions.
The contact information is on the SCTA site.
