It was really great to catch a glimpse of the old Wendover in the first minutes. Lots of memories at the Western Hotel and Café. Also, I forgot that Phil Hill had set those records. Pro drivers were much more versatile then, driving all sorts of venues. The salt surface looked awesome. That's pretty much how it still looked in 1970. I hope that the old Bonneville can come back again.

Was that USAC timing back then? I have a bunch of the USAC Longine Cronometers timing equipment that shows up in a lot of those old clips.

The "Kiwi Vincent" background music made me wonder if the Roadrunner was going to show up. It was more appropriate for a cartoon soundtrack. Interesting videos, though- thanks!

I happened to find this 16mm film of the Kiwis and their Vincent several years ago. It was in fair shape so I had a company restore it and put it on a dvd.
In 2005, I located this same Vincent in my neighborhood, almost 50 years from the world record setting date.
The owner graciously arranged for Russel Wright and wife to attend a very special 50th anniversary reunion of the rider and his machine. Russel in turn, presented the owner with the trophy given him for setting the land speed record. About 300 friends and fans came to celebrate the event.

Veering slightly: FS1 & NASCAR present:

"The first short film documentary, Bonneville 71, is set to premiere on Wednesday, Oct. 26 at 6 p.m. ET during NASCAR Race Hub on FS1.

"Bonneville 71 details how NASCAR Hall of Fame driver Bobby Isaac set 28 land speed records with a banned Dodge Charger Daytona on the Bonneville Salt Flats in 1971, accompanied only by his crew members, a USAC official and a Chrysler engineer. Using the authentic No. 71 K&K Charger and featuring interviews with original crew members Buddy Parrott and Ken Troutt, the documentary pays homage to Isaac’s historical runs by revisiting the Salt Flats to shoot all-new footage down a 10-mile straightaway. A remarkable story of innovation, the short film depicts Isaac’s desire and dedication to always test the limits of speed, no matter the barriers."
