Donald Campbell driving Bluebird CN7 around Goodwood circuit, I believe. Cornering must have been slightly tricky...

Hey, I'll blow my own horn - so to speak.
The Blue Flame is STILL the last American absolute land speed record holder.

These YouTube links should still work.

Dick: in the first link you refer to TBF making 24 runs in total, I think. Presumably runs 23 and 24 were for the record, but do you have details of the previous runs (dates/times recorded/speeds) that you would be willing to share?

Thanks in advance.

Wow! That exceeds my most optimistic expectations. Thank you Dick.

But "repaired with toothpaste"?? What's that about?

Veering further off-topic, I wish I could obtain similar information about Nolan White, Al Teague and Don Vesco when they were breaking 400 mph in the 1990-2002 timeframe...

The toothpaste was used as a lapping compound to repair a leaking gas pressure regulator. Somehow, a valve in the regulator was scratched and wouldn't seal. Goodyear's public relations rep, Dick Ralstin, had his shaving kit in his car so we borrowed the Colgate tube to fix the problem. That was hot rodding 101.

Al is working on putting history details together, we spent a bunch of time going over this stuff recently when he came up for the USFRA banquet. At the time we didn't keep track of that stuff, we were just too busy with our eyes on the goal & making evolution changes in Betsy. I believe it was SW 1990 when Al & Nolan made their first 400 runs, Nolan in the morning & Al in the afternoon on the same day from what I remember.

Thanks Sid. From the information available to me it is really difficult to work out what was going on in 1990.

My limited research suggests it was World of Speed where their first 400 mph runs were made. Al set top time at Speed Week at "only" 393.741 mph. Then Nolan and Al both went over 400 at the end of September and both set FIA records. There were others setting FIA records at the same meet: Rick White, Fred Larsen and John Baechtel. At the end of October Rick White also went over 400 mph. Quite a year!

Can anyone who was there confirm the above and/or fill in further details?

Let me interject, if I may:

It's reading topics like this -- talking about drivers cars running in the 4s -- is talking about some of the fastest speeds in history.  And you folks were there.

Now - when it comes time for me to decide whether I want to go to a meet where some of those "historical" speeds have the potential to be run -- I dare not miss out.  It's already cool for me to be able to think about some of the runs I've seen - fast and not-quite-so-fast -- so to turn down a chance to see more -- ain't likely to happen.

Anybody understand? :-D
