Carl Heap.
I never saw him without a smile on his face, even on a bad day.

Art Arfons.

Private time after SW 1989 with the two wheeler. This was one of the first two runs when it still had the dorsal fin on it. He crashed the next day near 300mph without the fin on. We were at the 2 when he came past us with the ski's still down, the right one dug into the salt & the car/bike went vertical then slid for about 1/2 a mile. We were the second truck on the scene, Art was a bit wobbly but ok. A moment in time I will never forget.

The next year he was back with the three wheel version but had after-burner problems they couldn't solve. To my knowledge, he never ran the salt again.

Not the salt, but a really good clip I hadn't seen before.

If you notice, on the second  youtube video Sid posted, the dorsal fin was rotating completely around as he started his run. I noticed it at the time and have video of it somewhere. It was controlled by some sort of autopilot device which was malfunctioning, and was removed for following runs.
His "Art Arfons" personalized speedometer was calibrated and numbered to 700 MPH. Cool operation, even his starting unit was turbine powered.

Ron, do you have any video of the crash? One of the guys I was with in the truck that day has it on camera but I've lost contact with him.

I don't think so. IIRC I taped several runs or attempts from the start line and some of the  starting prep. Don't think I stayed with it long enough to get the crash. My boy has some of my tapes and seems to have misplaced them. :? :?  I'll see what I can dig up and look. Been a long time ago.
