Hotels for WOS?

What's the scoop on hotels for World of Speed.  This will be my first time out.  Where do most folks stay, any special deals, places to avoid, etc.

It's still a little more than 6 months away, but the fever is starting to build.

All the hotels have regular prices during WoS, no gouging like Speedweek.  They only sell out if the meet coincides with Deer Widows Weekend.

What Stainlees said.  I'll add a caveat, though - - the Red Garter casino bought the old Americin Inn on the far west end of West Wendover a year and a half ago, and I haven't heard any feedback on the quality of the rooms there.  Other than that one -- everything from Motel Sux (I meant Six) through the Quality Inn, and even the casinos -- is fine, mostly.  In general, you get what you pay for (at least in the way of amenities such as coffee, breakfast, pool, wi-fi, and so on.  Any beg bugs are supplied at no extra cost.   The Best Western was also under new management, I heard, and with that I also heard some less-than-positive information.  At least through last race season the casinos did NOT have wi-fi in the rooms, evidently 'cause they don't want holed up but rather downstairs, gambling.

Should you prefer camping -- the KoA, down at the west end of West Wendover (kinda behind the Red Garter) offers quite a few campsites for your RV or tent, and about a half-dozen "kamping kabins". We've stayed in the kabins a bunch of times - they're decent and a heck of a lot cheaper than rooms.  If you go that route - take along an extension cord/multiple tap strip for your clock, refrigerator, etc.

I didn't realize that people needed to listen to hi-fi or whatever that is, any more.  But if you get the regular casino rates that time of year, the Montego Bay and the Peppermill are downright cheap for what I think are the nicest rooms in town. Just paid twice the rate in the middle of the Central Valley for comparable.  The Stateline, the old king of them all, is such a great disappointment in so many ways.

I think we paid ~$70.00/night for our room at Botany Bay last year at World Finals.

Montego Bay - like the old Mercury - that's it.

Nice room - really nice.

Food sucked - sucked really hard.

Who puts a "Bay" in the middle of a desert and offers up a fresh seafood platter?

And I suppose I probably wasn't thinkin' when I ordered it . . .

But hey, the rooms are nice, and the toilets are clean, which is important when you order up the fresh seafood platter and wind up having to inspect the cleaning crew's handiwork up close . . .

My one time stay for SpeedWeek was at Montego Bay. As the Midget one said, nice rooms - food sucks.....Room price was astronomical for SpeedWeek.
I hear decent prices for WoS.

At WOS or WF I like to stay at the Rainbow....If you choose the east rooms (the old Nevada crossing) the rooms are $10 cheaper and I usually do that. We use to stay there when it was new and not affiliated with a casino. Wi-Fi is there with a call to the front desk and I think the food there is good. You can walk to the Red Garter for a cheap breakfast, and the more I save the more goes into my toys...Good Luck

For WoS we have been staying at the Quality Inn in Wendover for the last 5 years; we booked already for this year. good rooms for ~$75/night; it has a pool too.

I agree with Jimmy Six, we stay at the Rainbow on the east side as well. Another reason we like the east side is its closer to the pool and hot tub, you dont have to walk through the casino to get to them and I like the food at the Rainbow. There is also plenty of parking if you have a trailer.

Agree, speed week will gouge you, deeply! Also, in 2011 we booked online and we received 10% off room rate by doing this.

A point of information, J.D. and Clay:  Where's the east side of the Rainbow.  I remember the building as having rooms on the west and the casino on the east.  I'll yield that there's the wing that stretches north - sort of over the lobby and registration, and that might be the "old" section, but other than that -- are there rooms over the casino or something?  Thanks for helping me get somewhat less cornfused.

Looking at the front of the building, go left(East) around the corner. There is a bank of rooms, 5 floors, up against the fire station. The rooms are above the pool and was a motel called Nevada Crossing as JD mentioned. A connecting hallway was built when the Crossing was absorbed by RPM(Rainbow, Peppermill, Montago Bay group). The RPM group is the enity that John Hanson is associated with.

Oh, yeah -- now I remember.  We've stayed at the Rainbow only once or twice, and then in the new section.  And while we eat at the Rainbow buffet or restaurant a couple of times per season -- I guess I've never paid much attention to lodging on the east side.  Thanks for helping me be not so cornfused.

Ellen usually reserves that end for the volunteers at WOS, but.  If you tell them you are there for the WOS, and the rooms aren't all taken, you can get a room on the east wing with a USFRA discount.  With that said, I hope I didn't make things difficult for Ellen, oh wait she lives for difficult.  Without her and Gary, I doubt whether the WOS would exist.  KUDOs' to all the staff and volunteers at WOS.

I like staying at the nugget. the prices were more than fair during the bub meets.

I think that the rainbow buffet is the best.
