Car numbers.....
« on: January 10, 2013, 10:10:18 PM »
I was thinking Roman numerals for something different.

Will someone complain or have issue?

or get the owner of 111 and 3 to give you their numbers, them no one will know.  :-D

You might get your timeslip in roman numerals too.

....and it will come as a long scroll, rolled onto 2 wooden dowels.  To keep things simple, speed will be rounded down to the next lower "C".

Avoid numbers with just 1's and 0's to avoid issues with illegal digital technology.

I was thinking about using binary numbers on our #439 bike, but there's not room on it for numbers at least 5" high and an inch wide - - it we've got to display 110110111.  I expect it'd make it difficult for the starters to read off to the tower, too.

Not attempting to go off-thread here, but to answer Glen's question about Italian
LSR, was there not a short-lived discussion somewhere on this list about a bigga tracka in the boot of Italy awhile back. Somewhere around "Lecce" (sp?) ?

Could you just stick an abacus or slide rule on the side so you can change numbers easy?

Cleaning out a drawer last weekend and found my "mini" slide rule in it's leather belt clip case.  Memories ...

They should still teach science with a slide rule.  Why?  You should always have a good idea in your head what the answer should be before you get a final number.

At least with a slide rule (mine was a Castell-Faber), you needed to keep track of the order of magnitude of the answer. Calculator users are sometimes monumentally wrong-- but to 8 decimal places.
