Methanol limits?
« on: December 12, 2012, 09:04:05 PM »
How much boost can Methanol deal with?

Anyone ever get it to detonate when rich?
My doctor told me to go out and kill people.
Well, sort of.  He told me to reduce the stress in my life.

I'm running 11.5 / 1 (static) with 12 lb boost, that ups the CR to about 17/1, I'm using  methanol,no sign of detonation,,yet
Tiny
Tiny (in OZ)
I would prefer to make horsepower, rather than buy, or hya it, regardless of the difficulties involved , as it would then be MINE

The turbo Offys used to run 70 psi .

We actually ran more than 70 psi in testing with a turbo Offy in 1979 without damage by shutting off the line from the plenum to the waste gate so it couldn't read the boost. The driver said he saw 90 psi.

The Indy people jokingly refered to running their Offys at that high boost for 500 miles as semi-controlled combustion in a non-reusable container .

As I remember the rules called for the waste gate to open at 65 psi and I actually thought that was pretty high.  :-o :-o :-o

How long is a piece of string?

Would depend a lot on compression ratio, charge cooling, ignition timing, yada yada yada....

70psi is pretty wild, what charge cooling were they running and inlet temperatures were the seeing?

There was no intercooling. The air went straight from the turbo into the intake. There may have been fuel put in before the turbo, I'll have to look at some old pictures and I don't have time right now. Alcohol tends to be really easy to work with. The main thing is getting it out of the system as soon as you're done.
