supercharger Speed Twin
« on: May 10, 2006, 01:33:47 AM »
One of my friends is interested in building a bike for a vintage supercharged 500cc class. He is using a 1954 Triumph T 100 Speed Twin and interested in Supercharging it.

He asked me to help but I am not a motorcycle guy and would not know where to point him.

He would like to know if some one like Drouin made a supercharger that was a bolt on or do you have to modify an old one? If you do where can he get a small enough supercharger for a 500cc?

Cheers

Has he considered a turbo or does he have to use a supercharger in the vintage class?

I'm certainly not a Triumph expert, but I recently completed a  t-100 flattrack/bobber build from a basket case 67 Tri.

During the course of the build I learned some of the frailties of the old Tri. 500 twins and would have to say they wouldn't be my first choice of a m/c motor to supercharge. Having said that, I applaude the desire to build something different and not follow the crowd ( ala Burt Munro )

Go to the following link and click on the Competition Board, there is a current thread running on supercharging the old twins including some interesting links.

Hope this helps.

P.S.- have your friend fill up his bank account and Good Luck!! :)

Some years ago in England there was a guy running a blown Triumph.  Not sure of the year but it was non-unit.  He ran a shorrocks cabin blower and had all sorts of problems with the barrels lifting off the case.  He solved the problem by taking two lengths of flat stock and two lengths of all thread.  The flat stock went under the case and on top of the rockers and the all thread held the lot together.  It sounds a bit Heath Robinson but it worked a treat.
Get off the stove Grandad.  You're too old to be riding the range.

Try TTS in Britain for a belt driven centrifugal blower. Drive sprockets will determine boost. Could also buy the smallest Eaton Unit from magnacharger and adapt.

If you decide to or can run a turbo, Garrett makes a tiny turbo for 400cc and up (50HP and up) but there is more to turbo sizing than that.  GT1241

If you simply take a too large supercharger and change the pulley size to reduce the boost, it will still have almost (or as much) load on the engine.
