Motorcycle Drag Leathers
« on: November 19, 2012, 12:02:20 PM »
Hi Folks

Getting ready for Loring in July and am trying to finalize on who to buy a leather motorcycle drag suit from.  I've heard good things about Vanson, Bates, and a few others.  I'm focusing more and more on Spartan Leathers and am wondering if anyone out there owns a suit and how you feel about it.  The fellow who runs the show has a reputation of good customer support, which is big in my book.

Anyone out there have an opinion on Spartan Leathers?

I would buy a suit that is good for SCTA events, also.

I am not familiar with Spartan.

Are the suit rules different for STCA?  Awesome machine by the way, saw you at Loring over Labor Day weekend. Great racing venue. Have you heard if they've come out with dates for 2013 yet?

thanks on kudo.
no dates for '13 @ loring yet.

scta requires all leather suits. no cloth panels. minimum venting at armpits and behind knees.
you never know when you may be at an scta event.
check for all the details before you order.

stop by next time you see the motorcycle.

The new SCTA rule for 2013

7.C RIDING APPAREL:
7.C.2 Leathers:
One-piece or two-piece 350 deg. (zipped together) all leather is required and the zipper must be sewn to the leather. Limited perforations and cloth or non-cloth panels are allowed in the armpit and at the back of the knee. No single panel can be larger than a total of 12 square inches each. Fairing (leather or cloth only) on the back of leathers is allowed in partial streamlined classes only.

I have three custom suits, two Bates and one Vanson, the Vanson suit is thin and has too many seams in the event of an accident than could come apart....this suit was made over ten years ago however is not as nice as the Bates custom suit that was also made over 10 years ago as well.

I am sure if you went to Vanson and spent the same time for fitment as I did with Bates and directed them to what you wanted they would make a great custom suit as well.

I crashed last year faster than any open bike rider in history and did it on a concrete runway, I walked away with broken bones and several abrasions however in retrospect I was happy with the protection the Bates suit provided.

What is really sad is that many racers race with suits that are legal yet are really not safe in the event of a high speed get off on any surface.

I have never heard of Spartan leathers btw however they may be fine?

Good luck with your choice and even better luck with your racing success.

John
