I have to apologize in advance for a double post, but I thought maybe it might spark some discussion on this subject.
So far I have set down and designed my own hub center steering hub. I have the needed materials material ordered, so next I start making the parts.
The housing material I selected is 7075 Aluminum, which upon completion will be anodized in an effort to give some protection from the salt.
The axle material order is 4140. I’m not sure at this point what, if any protective coating to use. That part is up in the air at this point.
The wheel hub will need to be designed to fit the HCS unit, and it looks like my choice for that will be 6061 Aluminum machined to go onto modular rim like to ones from, RC Components, or Weld Wheel. The deciding factor there will be controlled by the tire I end up with.
It appears to me that I will need to pay very close attention to bump steer. I think I have the solution to that, but the only way to know for sure, is to test the idea when I have some of the parts done.
I would like to hear something about what caster “rake” folks have run and what worked best for them.
I could possibly go on and on at this stage of the game, but for now I hope this will get a few responses.
