4th Gen Turbo Build

This car has been racing at Maxton for years... 2008 in stock trim, then 2009 and 2010 in progressively more
"serious" fashion. I had a thread on another site, but wanted to share it here... alas, 1 year old twins, losing a
job, starting a business, et cetera, has kept me from starting a build thread. Here we go.

We started with a stock bodied 1998 Z-28, LS1/T-56 with headers and intake. We ran 3 meets, being safety
limited to 150mph. Over the winter and subsequent spring of 2008/2009, the car was hauled to Dave Warfel
at Robinson Race Cars in Milford, MI. The stock drivetrain was removed and sold, the money used to buy a
stock 6.0L LS block from Kurt Urban, who also spec'd the internals. Here was the set-up for 09/10...

6.0L LS, stock crank, Compstar H rods, Diamond 8.9:1 forged pistons, 317 heads, LS6 intake, ZO6 cam.
Bullseye performance S488 turbo, CX air-to-water intercooled through ported LS6 throttle body
Jerico RR4 tranny, shortened 4 in. dia. Nascar driveshaft, Moser 9" with 31 spline axles.

This is how the car was run for 2009, 2010 saw the rest of the interior go, an aluminum dash, full door net
and the aforementioned Ultrashield full containment seat.

I admit... a pretty nice car to destroy for racing.



Dyno numbers on 9psi.



The original interior pull apart just enough to fit the necessary safety stuff in.



Kirkey seat with the temporary addition of "custom" head surrounds... (Now have FC Ultrashield)



Dual 6.5# Firefox bottles and our intercooler "ice box"  :-P



This is and always has been a budget-minded build, as the team members are as much
millionaires as we are astronauts. Dave built the engines, Luke wired the car, Woody
(and Steve when he's up from Florida) have done a bit of everything.

Are top speeds as of yet are: 195.962 in the standing mile at Maxton (June 2010)
                                         201.252 in the 1.5 mile at Loring (August 2010)

The water pump cavitated on the 201 pass, hydrolocked the motor and created some serious carnage.
The last 2 years has been a slow and arduous affair of building a new motor, building a more stout 1.75"
rollcage and in general making a better, simpler race car.

More on the new set-up and newer pics when I get time. The kids are up  :-D

Looks like a fun build!

Please post lots of details- especially about the turbo setup! :-D

nice build.
201 miles per hours is a really good speed.

maybe a dumb question here~~
         how does a water pump problem introduce water into the cylinder(s) ?
         or gallons of it into the lower end ?

Salt-
Maybe my engine vocabulary was a bit off; the water pump cavitation caused a massive
overheating problem, piston locked, rods bent, etc. Hydro then lock...

Flattie-
The current bottom end is a .030 over 6 liter, stock crank (they have been proven over 1500hp),
Callies rods and JE pistons. The top end has changed as well; we're using ported Cadillac CTS-V
heads, an custom grind cam from Virginia Speed, and an Edelbrock EFI Vic Jr. intake. Electronics
consist of the stock ECM, coils and wires, a modified harness and a Innovate wideband 02 system.
All in all, pretty simple set up. We use a boost referenced fuel pressure regulator being pushed by
Walbro and Bosch electric pumps and Siemens Deka 80lb/hr injectors.

I'm originally from Ohio, and my brother lived near Flint for years. His friend
Dave had lots of shop space at his disposal and agreed to build a new engine
and do fab work for a seat in the car. My brother was driving down for every
Maxton meet anyways, so sending/receiving the car was fairly easy.

The car currently resides in Elon, NC at my buddy Woody's shop, though parts
of the new build were done at Charlie Venable's(Cajun Kid) and Brad Everhart's
(1st guy to top 200 with a Harley motor at Maxton). I keep good company  :wink:

AFR looks a little lean to me for a LSR forced induction vehicle.   I personally like it in the 12:1 area and that is leaner than others like.

For Bonneville:  In my experience any window net that is not as large as the whole door is illegal.  This was from the head guys.  It might not say it in the book, but what they mean is a SCTA door net, which you must make yourself.  There is no such animal in other racing.  Helicopter stores often have the right cargo nets.  

Even if your limbs cannot exit the vehicle unbroken, you must cover area that unattached limbs might fly out of.  This is to make track cleanup easier.

I even covered the whole door, but had to use 3 nets to do it, and they were upset that it wasn't a single piece net.

Footnote:  Make provisions for the net to go to both the inside and outside of the bars.  That way you can change them when they change inspectors.  We moved ours twice so far, and have to move it again apparently.  #1 problem being is that "inside net" interferes with the steering wheel and egress, and the cage itself stops intact limbs from exiting.  Inside net plan is really dangerous in this application, but will we do whatever we are told even if it means crashing.  "Go out and roll it at the 2.25 to test the cage."  "I didn't read that in the book".  "It's a secret chapter, you are not cleared for security reason."

PS - The footnote part is intended to be comedy.  The net is to be inboard of the outer limits of the cage structure so that if you are sliding, it won't cut through the net.  This is what we originally did and were told it was wrong and to redo it before racing.

That was one of the first and only dyno runs of which I got a print-out, mainly posted it for base #'s...
Later in the year we were making a more reliable and AFR safe 720rwhp on VP C16. I hope to make
over 1000rwhp on the new setup. As for the door net-

Just need to find the thumb drive with newer pictures on it :/

As already posted in the ECTA board, the Camaro ran 203 and change on Sunday 9/29/13...
There is plenty of room for improvement, as we lost 5+mph in the first half mile from a previous
run. I knew that things were sideways, but my push truck driver confirmed the truth--- he could
see both sides of the front bumper as I struggled for traction in 1st and 2nd. We're looking at a
boost controller to progressively bring in the 15psi we're using now, as well as adding weight for
next year. We'll most likely be back for the June and July meets. Thanks to the ECTA volunteers,
board and all my buddies for helping me (finally) get into the ECTA 2 club!!!

Very nice car and I'll bet you run a lot faster as it gets dialed in.

You might look at the TurboSmart e-boost 2....

....controller.  It is what we settled on as it seems to have more features/options for the money than the others I looked at.  You can have up to 6 boost levels controlled either by time or rpm or by grounding one wire with a push button switch.  It also has other features such as controlling how fast the next boost level hits, over-boost protection and can control other items like water injection and additional features.

We are set up for a stepped boost level via the push button but haven't been able to run boost, or much of it on the license runs.
