Sandy
« on: October 27, 2012, 08:06:54 PM »
We have been dealing with the outter bands most of the day and getting worse. I hope Joe Timney and the rest of the folks on the eastern seaboard have battened down the hatches, tomorrow and Monday will be worse.

Good luck to those of you on the east coast. This might be a good time to visit relatives somewhere else.

Here in central California 4,000 miles from Sandy our weather is being affected.

The central valley and the Sierra foothills would be seeing some rain by Monday instead of later in the week.
That's right, our weather is being affected by Hurricane Sandy.

From the National Weather Service:
Quote
24-HOUR TEMPERATURE TRENDS SHOW WARMING THROUGHOUT THE CENTRAL CALIFORNIA INTERIOR. FURTHER WARMING WILL OCCUR ON SUNDAY AS THE RIDGE AXIS MOVES INLAND RESULTING IN HIGH TEMPERATURES SEVERAL DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL. LITTLE CHANGE IS EXPECTED ON MONDAY THEN A COOLING TREND BEGINS TUESDAY AS AN UPPER TROUGH APPROACHES THE COAST. THE PROGRESSION OF THIS TROUGH HAS BEEN SLOWED BY THE MODELS THE PAST FEW DAYS AS THE DOWNSTREAM PATTERN IS LOOKING QUITE CONGESTED DUE TO HURRICANE SANDY.
Well, it used to be Los Angeles . . . 50 miles north of Fresno now.
Just remember . . . It isn't life or death.
It's bigger than life or death! It's RACING.

Gee Joe, another test for the DCW shop, after this it should be Nuke proof.
And Joe D, you are on The Island, it's Sunday afternoon, do you know where your Chain Saw is? Are you working tomw?
My NYFD son got called in today, moving all the rigs at the Randall's Island training center to high ground. Very serious in NYC, like Joe T said big tide surge due to Sandy and the Moon tide.  Nice being 400ft above Sea level here in The Heights of 10598.
My # 343 car in a shop in College point near the Whitestone Bridge , this may get interesting.

During some recent weather related episode in NYC we could not use our debit/credit card in Oregon.  The big computer place that does the electronic transactions was out of service.  It was only for a day or so.  Something to think about no matter where you live.

I did some research and JFK airport is shown as 14 ft ... 10 ft tide surge predicted  so should have 4 ft to spare ... then there is the wind. This is going to be a long couple of days

OK so the Pacific Northwest gets razzed all the time for 39 inches of rain annually.

We certainly are better equipped to live with that than with the weather the east

coast of our nation is getting now.

One thing about it: there is no birth control in Washington State.

The weak kids drown on their way to school.

I still have compassion for all of you that this storm is affecting.

Glenn,
Heavy rain = no big deal, high winds = no big deal.  Together = big deal.  Rain softens the ground and then the wind topples the trees because the roots dont hold in soggy ground.  Then, the power lines come down.  It is really the loss of power that causes the problems.
