I've been using a 20 degree layback Kirkey "economy" seat for mock-up purposes in my '84 Rampage. I still haven't ordered my full containment seat, but will be ordering very soon. I'm going back and forth mentally over whether to buy a 20 degree seat, or a 10 degree seat. Let me lay out my line of thinking, and please weigh in with your thoughts.
I'm about 5-9, and 155-160 lbs, so not a really tall or thick guy. My proportions are pretty standard for my height and weight, not overly long in the legs or torso (I wear 32-32 jeans). As I said, I've been using the 20 degree seat for mockup. One of the things I want to achieve in the seat placement and angle is to optimize the ingress and egress for the car. In my mind, this means moving the seatback and head restraint as far rearward as practical. The pedal placement and steering wheel location are not yet fixed, so I have some flexibility with respect to these items.
By placing the seat as far back in the truck as possible, the largest portion of the window/door opening will be available. My concern with the 20 degree seat is that it "feels" very laid back when I'm sitting in the truck. I can overcome this by raising the seat, particularly the back part of the seat. The end result of moving the seat around to where it "feels" more proper, is that the seatback ends up moving more towards 10 degrees, and away from 20 (it ends up in the middle somewhere).
Is it better to use a 20 degree seat and tilt it "up" towards 10 degrees, or to use a 10 degree seat and lean it "back" towards 20 degrees? Since 15 degree seats are not common, and I'm not looking to spend more money for something custom, I'd prefer to use one of the standard offerings.
If you would be willing to share your setup and thoughts on this matter, it would be greatly appreciated.
Steve.
