Wow preliminary numbers are out!

The jump reached a maximum speed of 833.9 mph or Mach 1.24.
He dropped 119, 846 feet in free fall.

It also happens that this is exactly 65 years to the day after Chuck Yeager broke the sound barrier in the X-1 rocket plane.

Ho- hum.... he fell off a platform. There may have been some degree of skill involved in this stunt but I can't see it. Now, a new land speed record of over 400mph--- that's different!

Regards, Neil  Tucson, AZ  (opposing views are welcome, of course)

Neil, I have not done either one but I'd bet the pucker factors are very similar!  :-D

Along the lines that penetration is not possible even with a Teflon-coated, moly-greased straight pin!  :-o

Don't forget he had 24 miles to get to that speed, and no wind resistance!

Yup, that was good. Classy act by Felix Leaving Joes freefall end of the record intact.

I doubt that was the case. I think as Joe and I were talking about it, that the malfunction or fogging of face shield did not allow him to see his altitude. I would guess he pulled the parachute premature because he couldn't see it, and communication was spotty at that point. Of course he just might have said F it I had enough and pulled it.

Dont think so Koncretekid, he could only get that speed within the first 40 seconds of freefall. After that exiting the stratosphere the air resistance starts slowing him down.

He said he pulled the chute at 5,200 ft. which was 200 ft. earlier than planned. I think the reason he didn't get the record for longest time in free fall was that he covered the distance too quickly. If he'd waited for the full time he would have been well the under the altitude they considered safe to pull the chute.
