Classic Gas Coupe - engine rules question
« on: September 20, 2012, 04:48:37 PM »
I got asked this question.
EXAMPLE - 1981 or older camaro could use MSD style ignition & carb. or any mechanical fuel injection  & be legal.
from rule book I'd vote LEGAL.
what if U put in a late model LS  series engine ,  crank triger, coil near plug, efi,  & use GM ecm to control ?
LEGAL  -  NOT LEGAL ??   If not legal for CGC what class would it fall in?

My guess is the crank trigger and coil pack  can stay but the ECM  and efi have to go.

Agree, but in your first example, what makes it a GC? Need engine swap (LSx counts), quick change or non stock blower in the first place. Point of classic is, few cars before 1981 had EFI (sure some did) but you need to use that original EFI if so. At least that is way I read the rule.

There are crank trigger setups without "sensor controls"?

After burning my day on this question   (should be working on the comp-coupe)
I think! #1  1981 & older camaro  makes it classic & can NOT have EFI.
#2  would have to be 1982 or newer for altered or gas coupe??
#3  told QUESTIONER buy a rule book, read & I need to get back to work
#4  NEVER LEAVE THE SHOP DOOR OPEN WHEN U GOT TO GET WORK DONE1

re: #1
I believe you can elect to be in the "Modified Category"

re: #2
It can be any year after 1949 IF it does not meet the "Classic Category" limitations. (pg. 72)

I believe it can be any year after 1928 unless it has a Vintage engine.

#1- an 81 and older Camaro with EFI runs in regular, not Classic, Production, or Modified category depending on what other modifications, body or engine, are made. Modified contains GC, Alt and CC and all the engine/fuel/blown or not categories therein.

#2 Incorrect

#3&4- good plan  :-)

#1. Take to work. (lunch box) etc.

#2. Coffee table in front of TV (quick referance)

#3. The bathroom (most imporant one)
