A short motorcycle landspeed tale
« on: October 31, 2012, 07:05:33 PM »
Hi All,
Hopefully you remember the Harley-Davidson streamliner from 1970 that was built by Denis Manning, and piloted by Cal Rayborn.
This machine set a record at 265.492 mph, and was powered by an Ironhead Sportster engine. The two engines that were brought for the job were built by Warner Riley;
who himself has numerous landspeed records on his own sit-on Nitro powered Sportster.

Well, last Sunday 10/29 I had the great pleasure of going through a pile of boxes with Mr. Riley. They mostly contained the racing parts from his own motorcycle,
but while rummaging through...the two sprockets shown below appeared.

Riley said they were from the H-D streamliner, and are both transmission mainshaft sprockets (33T & 34T).
How's that for TALL GEARING?!

Hope you enjoyed a brief look back at some Bonne. motorcycle history.

See Ya  :-)

p.s.
My prayers go out to all those who were, and are sadly involved with Hurricane Sandy.

I remember it well - my first trip to the salt! It is now in the Indy race car museum.

Very nice discovery, I,ve also heard that cal was upset about something while filming "On Any Sunday" and Dennis piloted the streamliner for the movie. Is that true? Anyone?  Chris

Hey thanks for sharing that Drew.  My question since Warner has taken the time and effort to tudor me in the realm of land speed racing for the last six years would be -
How does a person get somebody like Warner Riley nominated to the Motorcycle Hall of Fame ?
Listening to him in this clip from last year and you can see the life long dedication this gentleman has had to land speed racing, as well as off road riding, and the exemplary attitude he has about passing on the knowledge he has aquired during his carreer.

How do we get him nominated ?

Contact your local AMA district rep and one or more board members to nominate someone..........Please supply them with factual written accomplishments.........hint: association with race-winners and record holders seems to carry a lot of influence........The AMA has a special nomination board that makes the final decision for each year of inductees
