Engine swap and Altered classes???
« on: August 31, 2012, 02:43:56 PM »
I have a question as to the requirements to run in Altered classes.  I would like to build my car to run in F/CBGALT and F/CBFALT.  I have a 1968 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia.  I was planning on covering up the headlights, front grills, and building an airdam.  I was wondering what else is required to run in this class.  I see that the rulebook says engine swap permitted, and I thought I read somewhere that an engine swap was required.  I was wondering if anyone had clarification on that.  Thanks in advance for any help.

Nope, swap not required.  Those other mods you mentioned will get you into Alt.

Oh yeah! That might take a few minutes.  What is going to take longer is to pull out the EFI a switch to mechanical injection or drawthru with a carb.  I am going to go towards the injection I think.

Altered class questions???
« Reply #6 on: September 16, 2012, 12:13:53 AM »
It looks like the current record holder is using them so it should be ok.  Next question.  I am looking at doing an engine swap now and the other engine will not fit under the hood/decklid.  Is it ok to have the valve cover stick through the hood or is it legal to build a bulge or bubble over it?

I understand the definitions, but in classic it states "unaltered in height, width, and contour" does that mean they are not allowed?

Also, In Classic with an engine swap, does the engine have to be pre 1981?  Or just the vehicle needs to be pre 1981?
Thanks again for all your help.

5.C Classic Category "...Classes within the Classic Category are the equivalent of Modified and Production categories with body modifications as allowed in those categories."  Seems clear to me.

How would one tell difference between a 1981 and a 1982 Chevy 350 or Ford 351?

Only the car body must be 1981. Any engine may be used. I doubt you would be called on a bulge to clear an engine part unless you get carried away and make it into streamlining.

No problem until:
1.A TECHNICAL INSPECTION:

All inspections will be made using the current year SCTA Rules and Records book. No competitor will be required to modify/revise/rebuild/augment any component or feature of the competition vehicle without a direct citation of the relevant rule and a clear description of the infraction/shortfall/misunderstanding of a specific entry in the rulebook. In the event of a continuing divergence of opinion between the inspector and the competitor the issue shall be referred to the Chief Inspector.

And the inspector says "My/our interpretation is.." Change this. And you argue. And you ask the Chief Inspector and he says: "Our interpretation is.."." Change it."  I wish they would write the rules so this didn't happen. Sorry. Venting.

When in doubt... send the question to the scta tech chair for the class or the scta tech line and it will be sent to the proper person for a written answer.  Be aware they may ask for more info or a drawing or measurement before ruling.  Keep said answer in your log.... also be aware of any rule changes that might alter that answer after it is given.

don't forget about the ignition.  gotta run either a single mag or single distributor... or you can run stock EFI if it's the same as what came on the CAR originally.  what year's your car?  modern subies haven't had the provision for a distributor in many many years.  not saying you couldn't put one on... will just take some work/effort.

jack, this sounds like a sore spot... hoping to not re-ignite any extinguished flames, but would you mind commenting on the specific incident and rule in question?
