Here are two tricks to cut down the wind noise. Put electrical tape over the mic switch if it has one, and wrap electrical tape around where the connector meets at the back of the microphone to cover that gap. If anybody has any open cell foam you can electrical tape it around the mic. Not pretty but works.

gen/shov, I loves me some sound checks from Oz, mate.

I'll dig through BUB radio's gear for some proper foam, cptdriller.  Thanks.

For wind noise you can also do what the "pros" do -- fit the head of the microphone with a foam "windsock".  It's transparent to most of the sounds - but muffles wind pretty well, cutting back on the part of the ambient.  Try any old foam - it'll probably help.

As for the cardioid vs. omni mike -- nothing fancy, since both of them are very common in the world of microphones.  The advantage to the cardioid is that it doesn't pick up sounds from behind the mike* - including stuff like conversations around the microphone and generators and so on.  It picks up sound from the firection in which it is pointing -- like the race track.

*  Well, it does pick up sounds from other directions, but just at reduced volume.  Try it -- you'll see wheat I mean.  I don't know if I've got such a mike at the house, but will dig a bit to see.

I put a cardoid in the box with the gear,  have been out looking for scrap foam for the salt flats begged, borrowed or stolen version.

Hey, Max.

I think you'll find a shop rag will suffice, and probably be more easily acquired.

While a cardioid mike does reject sound from the back and sides, an omnidirectional mic is less prone to wind noise.

That said, the mic you're using is actually hemi-directional by design - I short handed it to "omni" just for brevity, and in the application you're using it, it's functioning in the manner of an omni.  It's a commercial contractor Crown PZM which was initially designed for use in a wall mount application.  Sound is reflected off of the surface of the wall and into the element.  By not having the wall as a reflective surface, a lot of bass frequency is lost, but that's not a problem for what we're trying to pick up on the salt.

So if you see someone driving an Omni with a Hemi, just throw it in the glovebox.

Wasn't meaning to be critical. It sounds just fine. If anything would love to hear more motor's whine cause man that sounds good!

Next year would be great to have a mid-side (like a Shure VP88) in the mix pointed towards the courses. Would want to put it in a blimp. You could just rent that for the week.

Ooooh - I have one of those at work.  Great on a marimba or in front of an orchestra, but I think we need to continue to keep it mono for the time being.

We could take a wireless omni lavaliere and attach it to a weather balloon and reel it in with a fishing pole.

Ha ha! that would be cool! I agree that it sounds much much worse now. Our helpful hints didn't help.
