I thought it would be my final report....but things got a little more "interesting."

First, I thought I saw the 824 roadster ...but it was hard to tell, especially with the windshield wiper in the way.

I decided to head for the campsite (wherever that might end up) and the heavens opened up as I was driving back to Land's End.

The 3rd photo is the west side of the Bend in the Road area.  Reminds me of Sunday at SW last year.

Then I went up on the hill a bit (so did a whole buncha other folks) and the 4th photo is what I saw.  I wasn't too worried until I saw animals lining up, 2 by 2.

I hope the worst is past, but there's still a lotta thunder and lightning.  Stay tuned.

Nancy and Ileft the salt about 5 or so - driving slowly because it was pretty wet and the wind would blow up salt spray that made for about zero visibility through the windshield.  Then it rained enough to use the wipers to rinse the window.  No more than a half-inch of water on the salt, but that's still too much.  We got onto the pavement and all was well -- 'til we got about a half-mile from the bend.  That's where traffic was barely moving - letting the muddy vehicles that were trying to escape climb onto the berm and then the pavement.  We took photos of a few muddy vehicles - yup, glad we weren't in there.

I'll post more shots in the next post.

The not-so-bone-dry salt, showing what we saw from the ERC fuel truck and looking down the long course.  The wet doesn't show up really well -- but trust us, it's not all that nice right now.  It'll be all better tomorrow, right?

And a classic candid photo that might take a bit of explaining -- which you won't get from me.  We got back onto the pavement at Land's End and saw Jim/Texican standing there with a bunch of flowers in his hands.  HunH?  So Nancy handed me the camera, I shouted "Hey, JIM!", and took this photo.  You figger out what it means and let us know, hey?

Oh, yes - one more photo.  We were driving through the pits and saw our first-ever ATV/Segway/Crawler.  You see all sorts of things at the pints at Bonneville, don't you?

We just got back in from supper at the Salt Flats cafe at the truck stop.  And - in the parking area across the road, where you usually see a few semis and maybe a broken0down car -- there are dozens and dozens of campers - - tents, RVs, big rigs, little pop-ups.  The place is crawling with 'em - and there are a few BLM/Ranger vehicles, lights flashing red and blue, stopping folks that are heading in to the camping area at the Bend in the Road.  The "cops" are advising folks of the muddy conditions - if you go in, they tell 'em, you'll be putting yourself at risk for big towing bills and stuff like that.  Go if you want to - but don't say we didn't warn you.

It looks like there's quite a big party atmosphere at the parking lot.  No idea how bad it is in the Bend area right now, and we did see a few vehicles that had been in the mud when we drove past - and they're out on the pavement, so it can't be too bad.

We'll make a decision tomorrow or even Sunday if we have to move Salt Talks away from the bend.  We'll probably move it to the new Museum's parking area.  There are at least a couple of dozen rigs and tents there tonight -- it's working out well.  Stay tuned for details on Salt Talks.

PS  We didn't have a camera with us when we went to supper.  Sorry for no pics.

Hi Slim

I was wondering where the new Bonneville Museum is located related to the Stateline Casino, since my last time there was in 66' i remember it and the last Hotel at the east end of town .

Thanks, Don

Great photos, Mike.  Keep 'em coming!  Woody:  I hadn't thought about the watermark causing the problem, but ya never know.  It's a thought worth considering...over a cool one (make mine cream soda, please) sometime next winter.  :)

Here are a few from this morning:

A pretty dramatic sunrise and the entire world (well, almost) rounded the Bend on their way out to the salt.

A lot of the water that fell last night seems to have been absorbed.  I expected a lot more standing water, but things could be a lot worse.

The "Land's End Rush."  You'd thing they'd just opened up new territory for homesteading.  I've been here for 30 minutes preparing this post and it hasn't diminished a bit.

The sun is up, the sky is clear and blue and I think it's time for me to head for the pits.
