A happy story.  The car in these photos was built by Rob Freyvogel for a...well, I don't know the whole story, so I won't go on with that.  It eventually became the Vinson Racing entry in the A/BGT class.  The car had never been run anywhere until this week when Rob made shakedown runs at the same time he was getting his competition license.

There were a few bumps along the way as almost always seems to be the case, but this afternoon, Rob finished his licensing runs AND qualified with a 254 mph run on a 246 record.  Rob's the smiling guy in the 2nd photo.  We'll see how things go tomorrow in Record Returns...but for the moment, things are going pretty well.

From yesterday in Impound:

This definitely ain't yer father's Olsmobile!  (two images)

Not the best shot...hard to shoot a bike in the back of a truck, but the subject made it worthwhile, I thought.  A 500 cc BSA manufactured around 1945.  British Army bike.  Flathead motor allows it to run in the 350 pushrod class.  He ran about 70 mph to get to Impount.

Six records for $2 grand...that's how much the owner/builder told me he has invested in this sidehack rig.  I can't find his name in the program; maybe someone else will identify it.

Moving on.

Let's hope he's closer to 750 cc's, otherwise he's running I/GT.

Which makes it an even more impressive speed.

Chris,

it's an 850CC block sleeved to 750cc for J/GT. He melted a piston early due to one ram tube falling off during a run and the consequent lean out. They set a record of 109 and change but then upped it by running 115 yesterday. They were in impound, didn't hear their run today. Not bad for a 3 cylinder 2 smoke. SAAB made a 2 cylinder version too.

Cheers,
Rob

Midget, et all,

Just for fun:  750cc 3 cyl, 2 stroke, carburated, etc, etc, with a properly sorted engine combination, ought to easily make 130 bhp/litre.   .75 Litre * 130 bhp/Litre = 97.5 bhp

I'm sure there are some 2 stroke engine guys out there with more engine dyno experience than I have with 2 strokes, who can add their experience & thoughts.

The RZ350 Trinity racing big bore kits (650cc) are making about 155 at the rear wheel in a mild state of tune.  500cc MotoGP machines back in their day were making close to 200 rwhp.  I think I saw somewhere Loris Capirossii ran at Bonerville with Yamaha on a 500?

Hi, there, boys and girls and all the ships at sea.  Here's what's going on:

First of all:  Max's motel (i.e. Bed Bug Heaven) didn't wake him early enough, so he's just on his way out to hook up the audio.  He'll be on the air in fifteen minutes or so.

Second, we're only going to run #1 and #2 for the rest of the event.  And because the first mile was getting pretty chewed up, both courses were moved one mile downcourse overnight.  So we're now using what was mile marker #1 yesterday -- as the 0 today.

And that means that instead of getting things up and running so you'd know what's going on -- I've been towing toilets from the old start lines to the new ones - - for the last hour or so.  I took a break to let you know the story.

Return runs have begun already, with the first car going down about a mile and a half and spinning.  I'm typing and didn't hear what vehicle it was.  I'll get started with that stuff in a few minutes.

And that's what's going on.

Ah- Bob Merkle (?) just backed up his record with the 1959 Metropolitan.  No speed - sorry.

7552 REMR running 215 yesterday on a 212 record is next.  It's Rat Trap LSR on #2.  First mile  195     1/4 207   first mile 211.550     216.557  middle mile      217.990 last mile -- go to inspection for your record..

Team McLeish next on #2 on a 158 record.  H/FMS, right?  157 in the 2 1/4 for it -- car #8.   Running to the three -- 161.312  Oughta be another record.  Corngratulations.

Doug Grieve in the Salt Cat II 9991 is pushing off on #1     2 mile 186   2 1/4  207    first mile   213.618  middle mile   220.470  NICE RUN, Doug   222.2 yesterday -- new record!

On #2 first mile for car 9932    mile speed 146.815

Then, speaking of issues that got in the way of telling you this morning's story -- while all of the other stuff was going on is when the tiny little screw that holds the lens in one side of my glasses decided to go hiding -- so I'm sorta blind this morning.  Ain't life great?

Course #1:  6556  D/S on the way now   179 1/4  200 in the last mile

Next on #2  is a slow-moving bike -- putt-putting down the course.  Dang -- he's already to the 1/2 mile  No announcement of number yet.  481B -- yeah, that's who it is.

Next on #1 is 318  the Truz Missile    in the mile   199   1/4 mile 221   first mile  230.050   middle mile  246.529   last mile  256.140  Nice run, hey?  against 256.082 yesterday.  Decent.

Can we get a recap of the Speed Demon activity?
Well, it used to be Los Angeles . . . 50 miles north of Fresno now.
Just remember . . . It isn't life or death.
It's bigger than life or death! It's RACING.

Lee Sicilio in the 97 car backed up a 275 with a 279 this morning.  I didn't hear if it was all in the same mile.  Pretty fast out of the box.
