ECTA July 2012
« on: July 07, 2012, 05:51:50 AM »
Huh.  Parked at the locked gate @ 5:45 a.m.  Lotsa traffic but it's all turning in to the airport on the other side of the street, crossing the overpass and thru the "staff" gate.  I'm in no hurry, but kinda' jazzed.
Seen it all, done it all, can't remember most of it.

Left track oiled down at 11:30. broke for lunch and to shift to the right hand track. Hotter than 40 hells, well almost. Some cars seem to be having problems getting down track. Hooley shut down before half track... Amy does not do heat well. First pass 133.994. She said she was not focused. We hope to break 140.00 this afternoon or tomorrow morning. only about 75 or less entries including bikes. Keep cool...

He was in line this afternoon about 4:30 ish. They called racining for about 30minutes for sprinkles and wind. then a couple of bikes ran then I think they called it a day. At very least Hooley will be at the front of the line toomorrow. Looks like some folk have bailed out for one reason or another.

Has Hooley made a full pass yet?

Hooley did make a full pass around 3:00 PM and it was either 206 or 208 (heat and CRS). His second chute got tangled up in the first but he did get it stopped safely. I talked to him after that run and he was going to try and get another run in before the track closes (6:00 PM). Not sure if he got another pass in this afternoon as I left just before the rains came.

Here is what George Hake (PurplePckup) had to say about Hooley on the RRT board.

Well today was an interesting one. Temperature was over 100 degrees and humid but there was a gentle breeze so it was bearable. We got the car in line to run early and I was back in the pits with Ken and Charlie hoping to catch a video of Hooley's first run. There was a decent field of cars but not too many so the wait wasn't too long. You can always tell when 974 is coming because it is about the baddest sounding car there. We heard the roar and saw the orange Studebaker come roaring through the heat waves. A strong first gear then......silence as the Stude coasted by. When he broke the timing lights the speed was a blinding 35mph. Long story short, he lost all electrical and after a quick check Hooley found a corroded connector….probably years of Bonneville salt related.

Problem was quickly fixed and it was back to the staging lanes. The officials were watching this run to make sure there wasn’t any parachute problems after the tangle problem in April. The car made a decent run at 206 mph but there still was a chute issue which will be solved tomorrow by using just one chute. The fuel mixture was still the same as April when the temp was in the 40’s and Hooley said it felt rich so he made it a little leaner and got back in line just in time for a strong thunderstorm to pass through which took out most of the standing canopies, including ours. Of course the race was called for the day but we’re still in line and hope for a good trouble free, FAST run tomorrow morning. More storms are predicted for tomorrow afternoon but we’ll see. We’re having a great time in spite of the “issues”.

Nice Sunday afternoon, parked at the starting line.  Hooley made a couple of good passes today, but I'll let someone else post exact numbers.

Good thing no one is listenind to the audio, as my 4G hotspot went gunnysack late this morning.  However, as we are in Wilmington, the Verizon store is right near Walmart and after messing with computers for an hour, the guy that sold me this a few months ago showed me how to reset it with a paperclip.

I'll get some more audio going.  May leave mid-afternoon as I've an early morning activity back in MO tomorrow.  Too bad about the 4G, as both computers were doing very well w/o glitches.  Of course, I have 3G sticks which I failed to bring along forback up.  As the scouts say, be prepared.
