BIG diesel engine !!
« on: June 26, 2012, 08:38:33 PM »
Anyone want a big diesel engine?

Aerodynamics might be an issue, it will need a pretty big body to hide it from the air flow.

I don't think aero will be an issue. getting it to hook with 11,800 pound/feet might be a problem. :-D

Now see a B I G diesel engine:  http://www.gizmag.com/go/3263/

Designed to provide the motive force for a variety of supertankers and container ships, it comes in 6 cylinder in-line through to a whopping 14 cylinder version. The cylinder bore is 38 inches and the stroke is just over 98 inches. Each cylinder displaces 111,143 cubic inches (1820 litres) and produces 7780 horsepower. Total displacement comes out to 1,556,002 cubic inches (25,480 litres) for the 14-cylinder version.

At a length of 89 feet and a height of 44 feet, the total engine weight is 2300 tons - the crankshaft alone weighs 300 tons.

Seriously, there is a Detroit 12V71 (fresh) on Ebay for $12k.  That is a steal.  It weighs 3000lb, is two stroke and runs 2 superchargers (2x 6-71).  882 cubic inches.  Put turbochargers on it, it will easily make 1000HP with no real effort.  Spray nitrous into it, and get serious, and you might push 2000HP.  It will fit in a full sized pickup, the DT AA record truck runs one IIRC.

Somebody put one in a street rod.

I wanted to buy it, but I found that you can't run boat engines in motorcycle classes...  :(

Unlike the rest of the Detroit 71 series engines, the 12V was a piece of junk. The 92 series is typically what you see in the heavy haulers at the salt. Carl ran a 16V-92 in the Pheonix, 1472cu in, 270+ mph..
The turbo's on my streamliner came off a 16V-149, 2384 cu in.
I can tell you it's an absolutely awsome feeling to snuggle up to one of those babies at full song in a confined space!
