250 mph+ car tires
« on: June 12, 2012, 12:39:13 PM »
Only "special tires designed by the manufacturer, i. e. Bonnevile tires or land speed tires" are allowed per the rulebook for such speeds. No existing lsr tires look very suitable for 1.5 mile hard acceleration on pavement.

As it is, if its tires were legal, a top fueler or funny could idle for 1.25 miles, then punch it and set an easy record.

What's next?

Do you think a NHRA fuel car could "punch it" with LSR tires?

No. I meant with drag slicks. This would be illegal not recommended per LTA rules. I'm wondering whether there's any legal, safe way to build a 251 mph car to run LTA.

To be really significant, a mile or 1.5 mile record should be faster than a 1/4 mile record for an equivalent class, seems to me.

If I followed your math a Top Fuel car should run 20 times faster at Bonneville than at the 1/4(1000').

Apparently you didn't follow it. We're talking about pavement here, anyhow. (You're teasing me, I guess.) But it should go at least as fast at Loring or Mojave as it does at Pomona.

What I'm getting at is "the future of land speed" as Loring bills itself, has just about maxed out for cars, unless some new tires show up.

Of course NHRA fuel cars depend heavily on a well prepared surface. The Loring surface would be like ice by comparison.

I doubt that the tires they use would last for the mile an a half.  :-o :-o :-o

Yeah, but they could idle to maybe 1600 feet from the finish, make an easy pass, and run in the high 280 range or so, which would give them the course record, but why bother?

For smaller displacement cars under 250 mph, drag radials are good per the rulebook. Lakesters and streamliners might run some very good numbers there. You'd want a different build than for the salt, though.

Pretty expensive bragging rights, it's a card accepted at very few outlets.......

Their 1/4 buddies  will say "so what" , their new friends will give them due credit for their 132ft time and move on.

Can't see many people with those big, thirsty, parts hungry motors seeing it as an attractive  milestone....

Now, the 911, that's something different.

Ooooh! I'd donate to a fund to help pay to get the 911 to Maine.

One thing you could do (I think) at Loring or Mojave, if they set up the lights for it, and paid the bureaucrat, is run for FIA or FIM standing start kilo records. Accepted worldwide.

I think so. that's why I said kilo instead of mile.
