« on: June 11, 2012, 08:36:27 PM »

Check it out, Delaware Chassis Works is sponsoring a Parachute Seminar by Bob Stroud at the July Ohio Mile.

This should be a good one, I have some questions. I'm going to have the crew (my kids) go to this and take some worry out of the end of the run.

I set in on this meeting with a filled room. The knowledge and information that flowed through that room was astronomcal There was a lot of informaton that will help make some safety changes. If you ever have the chance to set in on one of Bob's seminars please do it, you will enjoy it.  Thanks ECTA and Bob Stroud for putting this on for us.

Great stuff and Bob is a hoot!

My notes:

Stroud makes drag chutes for a living and LSR chutes as a hobby.

Call & talk to Bob Stroud or Joe Timney before you order any whoa laundry!!!!

Chute has two functions:

#1 Stabilize
#2 Slow: 2g load or less for cars, 1g load or less for bikes.

Drag chutes are short, LSR are long and smaller the faster you go!

Pilot chute pulls bag out, makes lines taut and then deploys main chute.

Chute must go into clean air! Should be out & up @ 45°! Some liners are straight up!

Spring deployment preferred over pneumatic! Monitor the spring health!

Do NOT use powder to pack chutes. Pack chute just prior to your runs.

Do NOT pack chute overnight or for extended periods. You WILL get bad deployment!

Springs do NOT like to be compressed near coil bind over long periods of time!

Always clean salt off with plain water! [Not necessarily in the shower like Joe!  :-o You'll have to ask Joe! :-D]

Ideal attachment is center of mass for bikes. Suspend from a crane to find it!

Attachment for cars is somewhere between cam & crank CL.

Pivot diameter should be 1"~1.25"

Thanks for posting your notes.  They showed me the error of some of my ways, answered questions I had been trying to noodle out, and enlightened me about things I hadn't even considered before.

I'm no where near needing a 'chute but the seminar was truly a gift.  It'll probably help me most at Bonneville in my volunteer duties.

THANKS to Joe and Bob!
