Missing classes for a given displacement
« on: June 09, 2012, 01:02:19 PM »
In the SCTA records book there are some record that are missing for a given displacement class.  For example there is no MPS-BG for 350cc motorcycles.  Does this class not exist for this size engine or has there just never been a record run?

Thanks

With thousands of bike class options it is not hard to believe no one has ever tried to set a record in that class.  If it is not listed it is open... if it turns out someone has the record and yours is faster you win, if yours is slower.... well there is always next year with a chance to go faster

... if you plan on running at Elmo, there are minimums and if I read the book correctly its 148 mph to get the record.  Tony

"...If it is not listed it is open..."

N o, no, no!  don't believe that part of Stainless' comment.  A bunch of years ago we ran Nancy's little Ninja 250 on a record that wasn't in the book -- and therefore we assumed it was open.  Two runs later we pulled it into Impound - - to be greeted by Tom Evans asking something like "Why are you here?"  We told him about the no record in the book - and he promptly pulled out an "official" list of records and sure enough, there was an existing record in the class.  Dang, we all decided -- it was a typo, so to speak, and didn't get entered in the Rulebook listings.  So no record for us after all.

Lesson learned:  Don't assume that there is no record just because there isn't one listed in the rulebook ('specially for "unusual" classes, like M-PS-BG 350).

But, then again Jon, that was an unusual situation.  There are hundreds of unlisted records in the Motorcycle section, and almost all of them are open -- at Bonneville, not El Mirage.  There are 22 Motorcycle entries at this year's SpeedWeek running on Open Records.

So there are published records in the rule book, published records online, and an official record list?  How does that work, why not just publish the official list?

Apparently, like Jon said, there was a "typo".  Maybe like the V4/MVOT that went 197 at El Mirage last meet.  The records listed in the Rule Book and on line are the best we can do.  Once in a while, there's a f-up.  Like Jon's case.

Which was my point in the second part of my post.  If there is a record, it will me discovered when your record for the open class is processed.  Remember the scta is a volunteer organization, even the pros make mistakes.
If you just want a record at Bonneville there are several hundred obscure classes to choose from...
Most of us just want to go  fast.

Well, it used to be Los Angeles . . . 50 miles north of Fresno now.
Just remember . . . It isn't life or death.

I see this record in the rulebook on page 136, Bonneville. El Mirage has no provision for M class chassis, 11.C page 161.
