I use a Doc Z roller starter every meet for the past few years and I agree with saltwheels262 that there is a learning curve with the rollers.  However for this bike with direct drive and no clutch he cannot use rollers as when he moved off the roller onto its ramp it would launch the roller system backwards and the bike forwards at an unpredictable angle.  That would be dangerous for all those around him.

Good to know that Joe is the go-to guy on scoots.  Being not a bike guy it's one of many things I didn't know.

I don't see how to use a roller thingy with no clutch.  But those board track guys were crazy, THAT I know!

well guys the first thing is brakes, there is a period correct rear brake / clutch thing but its pricey like 1500 bucks. then we would have to lace it to the wheel. find tires that are worthy and such. i will post pictures tonite and give joe a call after work.

we also got a 98% correct flathead, and another flathead that is close. maybe i can get the guys to bring them to ohio for display.

i can see this LSR stuff can be very addictive, time consuming and a heck of allot of fun. i got a AHDRA drag race in 2 weeks, then its LSR / LSR / LSR / LSR. everything i look at is now....what will that do at willmington. [remember i work on a golf coarse, were everything is slow]

RUNT

IT WAS 61CID STOCK, NOW 74CID WITH PERIOD CORRECT MODS.
i really don't think it will go 100mph.

I try to put all my money and time into land speed racing. Otherwise it goes to waste.

How fast do you think you can get a golf cart to go? I mean if you strip it down put in a cage and add some more batteries. :-)

i know the deal, i got a few calls to make. will post a few pictures as soon as i get them. i would for sure want a brake on it. yes its direct drive, no gears, or clutch.

dam thing is loud with 12 inch long open pipes.

Could you start it and leave it idle on a stand, and then "drop it" to run?

Remember the E. J. Potter method: jackstands while the engine runs in gear, drop the stand to launch.
A stand could be used (the usual type has slots or hooks for the swing-arm ends, axle, blah, small wheels, and handles at 90°), handles up (relaxed) while on rollers. As the engine coughs, the handles go down and the tire clears the rollers. Idle for a minute to heat the engine up, push the bike (still on the stand) away from the rollers and let-r-go.

Why not just push start it like they did when the bike was new?

Dropping a spinning wheel on a 90 year old motorcycle could brake the chain or a spoke. Pushing it would be safer.

Gary

I'm with Gary. During the era of the board tracks it was pushed off, raced, shut off and putt putt to a stop. Now that was when the men were made of iron and the track was made of wood. What about an exhibition run or runs? I think the powers that be (ie. the race director) may go for it. I hear that he IS the owner of the worlds largest honda 4 collection. I'm not a bike guy (i fall off of them, even when going slow). But I would love to see the history!!

How about it race director? Do some of that director stuff!
