1921 HARLEY BOARD TRACKER

ok, my old road racing pilot and i built a period correct 1921 privateer board tracker. its an awsome machine [the one in my profile picture] now just to get the base of our questions set. its got no suspention, no nuetrual [direct drive] and no brakes. we have no problem putting a single rear brake on it and of corse good tires, but do not want to molest this historicly correct machine.

can it be direct drive [we would have to push start it]  its ok if there is no class for it we just want to know what it will do

i will figure post pictures when i get them...also we have been asked to have it shot for american iron magazine, im sure we can do both this september in willmington

Could you borrow some starting rollers from someone?
Start it on the rollers, clutch it and push of the rollers then ride away from there?

Before I would do any modifications at all, I would contact the motorcycle tech folks at ECTA and ask for a rule variance to run it the way it is.  How fast do you think it will go anyway?

The push start bit is something I can't address. It has no clutch correct?

  But you will need a couple things like a chain guard a teathered kill switch and a fuel shutoff the rider can operate from the seated position. And the rear brakes. If all of that is OK and the proper safety wire and all then it should go through tech . I assume no battery.  I would love to see it.

I've seen roller starters for bikes numerous times - but don't know for sure at all about a push start for them.  Streamliners -- yup, no problem with a push start.  But P/P, M/anything or A/Anything - - I've got no help.  Look it up or ask the officials for an official answer.  Van Butler or Matt Shuss are the two guys you'll want to find.  They're in the '12 rulebook.

I think as a board tracker it has no way of disengaging the engine from the wheel. A person would push it in gear with the ignition off. Then the rider switches on the ignition and away you go. I believe they tow started the bikes on the board track. After the race you just shut it off and coasted to a stop. If you put it on a roll starter and got it running I would think it would wheelie stall or snap the chain when it moved off the roller. Ask Todd and Joe

It sure would be neat to see this piece of history run down the track. Obviously all safety requirements must be met, but outside of that, perhaps a time-only run would be allowed. Please let us know what you find out!

ransom t, how fast.....as fast as it will go! it would be nice to see 100mph. however fast it goes i hope its not faster then my buell...LOL!
i know the deal, i got a few calls to make. will post a few pictures as soon as i get them. i would for sure want a brake on it. yes its direct drive, no gears, or clutch.

dam thing is loud with 12 inch long open pipes.

I see from another post that you have a rulebook. You will have to follow all of the safety rules outlined. You can have a crew member push you off if you want. I for one would love to see the bike sitting in the pits even if you decide to not modify it.

my 24 volt , plug in , drag style starter broke at the bub meet a few years back.
the jessup family from texas were ready to tear down for their record.
they loaned me their roller starter for the rest of the week.

there is a learning curve with those rollers .
