Measuring Engine Displacement
« on: March 06, 2012, 02:55:56 PM »
Hi Everybody
Baz here from the UK. I was over racing on the salt in 2010 on my turbocharged Hayabusa. Hoping to be back this year, if not definetely next year. I was hoping somebody could help me. An organisation called Straightliners are organising a British Records Meeting over here in May. I am sure when I was at Bonneville I saw the gentlemen in impound verifying cylinder capacity with a liquid 'u tube' type piece of equipment, which was screwed into the spark plug thread, obviously to avoid removing the cylinder head. Can anybody tell me how to source this device please.

Thanks for the help everybody
Baz

I believe you must dissable  train to use the bubble tester. The valves for that cylinder must remain closed. Not easy on the 'Busa.

They use some sort of expanding spider like thing at BUB to measure bore if the spark plug is in the center of the head.  They use a depth gauge to measure stroke.  These are not the bubble tool but they allow things to get measured without taking the motor apart.

The fellow named "AHG" on this forum used the spider tool to measure the Triumph displacement a few times.  He might know.

Drew uses the aforementioned depth gauge and caliper with that drops to horizontal once it is the spark plug hole on DOHC engines. We Harley Davidson guys have to pull heads off for measurement.

Some engines (like the ZX10) need to be tilted on the rear mount to allow the tool's length to clear the frame spars.

Pump tester
Valves need to be disabled on the cylinder being measured.

Bore & stroke measuring tool
Spark plug needs to be in the centre of the bore.

I was going to post the name/number of the supplier I use for the car stuff. The"dip stick" is sourced from Skip at A1 Starter(second web address in the above post), good guy-great service. Don't call on Monday, he is on the way back from some race he runs on Monday morning.
