Here's a Youtube video taken while flying over Lake Gairdner.  Sure doesn't look promising, but then, we've all seen how quickly the salt can dry out.

And then - I'll mention that I don't see a separate topic for the Australian racers.  How'd that happen?  Should I create one?  Things seem to have going fine, but I don't want to be rude and deny them their fair place in the sun.  Tell me of your choice, ladies and gentlemen.

I seem to remember that a couple of years ago, the salt got dry, but the access didn't.  They're not exactly 5 miles from the nearest casino and 0 feet from the paved road.

WE have friends down there that we suffer for just as they show concern for us when weather controls out events.

Lets give them an open tablet and say the same prayers for them that they would say for us.

Ya know that bit at the end of the road where it got pretty ropey at Speedweek 2011, well the problem with Gairdner is that that spot regularly washes down to nothing and under that salt is slop, that edge of the lake is a creek, it's the last place to dry out.....in 08 I went out there after the meet was cancelled a week out , the track was useable and hard as concrete but the access was completely f*****. they now have tracking they can lay down.

The secondaryaccess problem is the 100 miles of dirt from the highway to the lake, all year it's ok, if it gets wet and 400 vehicles it turns into a creek, it isn't a built up road, it's too remote and lightly travelled to justify.

I'm not going this year, but in my mind I'm half packed and hurting bad.

Hey Don, oh don't worry .....I'll get you eventually.

Whilst a lot of the country is in in flood due to the rain that went across half of the country, our lake only recieved 25mm /1 inch and 2 days prior 16mm /   1/2 inch .      Last week it was reported that nearly 2 inches of standing water below and in front of our canteen .
The water can blow 30 miles away overnight and also evaporate . We are confident that the racing will go ahead but our ramp access to the salt which is about a 20 degrees  downhill slope gets pretty soft at the edge . This is the big variable . On the video fly over our canteen comes up at the 3 minute mark and the adjacent ramp is probably 50 yards closer to the plane . the canteen would be level with the one mile and the plane is tracking up the course , from the start line .

from November thru to March is normally the "wet season" in the top third of Aus,, this year we havent seen the big high pressure systems that develope between us and the Antartic, these systems drive(energise) the lows south of the equator, thus the rain,, because of the smaller highs, the main rain systems have been much further south in the country, a lot of areas down south are flooded at the moment,, the majority of the rain seemed to be north and east of Gairdner, pheww,,

i am told that a bridge on the Barrier Highway has been washed out,  the highway is closed, this is "the"  highway for many (all) travelling to the salt from the north east coast, we are still 10 days out, so all hope is not lost, :-),,
