Hot Rod Lincoln :2012 Bonneville ..................
« on: February 26, 2012, 11:19:50 PM »
After running on the salt last year with my dad and brother in the '88 Mustang GT ( 342" Ford, car ran 179.79 on the 5 mile course) we've decided to step it up a bit for 2012:

2011 car:

2012 car:  Hot Rod Lincoln

the roll cage work is being done by our life long friend Ron. He has a bit of experience building roll cages and cars. For 5 years he built the Paris Dakar rally cars for Jean Louis Schlesser.

We'll be running Gas Coupe ..... not sure of the engine size yet. Not sure if we'll do a 302" or a Windsor. The car will more than likely have a Jerico in it.

On the engine.. thought about putting my 409" Windsor Ford in it that I built with Danny Crower for the 2004 Engine Masters competition. It made 650 hp at 6,500 on pump gas with a few changes it will make 700+ at better than 7,000 rpm.  We have a few options with it, but just might build a 302" smblk.  I need to figure that out here in the next month.

This should be a great project for my brother and I to do again with my dad.  I don't think any record will be in jeopardy this year, we just want to run better than 200 and go from there.

Stay with the plastic engine. You can place the weight you save where it will needed the most.

76 days and counting.................

Had to regroup and figure out what we wanted to do with the available time and budget.
Long story short, a friend was selling his two off-road racing engines and transmissions so we picked them up and decided to run the car in F-class.  Currently we plan on running in both BGC and GC.  Still lots to workout including getting both engines rebuilt, including some new parts.

We have lots of progress to make in June.......we shall see:

A little progress:

Engine mock-up

G-Force trans..... we will make it a 5 speed:

fresh engine parts:
Crower billet 3.59" stroke

We are going to work on getting the car done with the NA engine first and hope we have time to complete the turbo engine by mid- July, but have everything ready to go to swap in the car and show-up with the turbo to run BGC first then swap out the engine at the salt to run the N/A class.

That's an awfully large car  with a cd of .31

Corrected

Originally I was thinking "D" or "C" class  or even "B" when we got the car. With a cd of .31 and a wheelbase of 109" and a curb weight of 3,700 lbs that all added up to a nice stable car at speed.

I figure we were going to add weight, so starting with a well balanced heavy car wasn't going to be an issue we can place the weight where we want it.

The car is large but in 1993 the Ford engineers ran one to 182mph with a 290hp Mod engine with an automatic trans. They figure the engine was making 250hp on the salt.

I don't think the size is going to be an issue with 750+hp (turbo engine). ...but then again I'm new at this so who knows?

So is an aircraft carrier and they'll do better than 45 knots.

I seem to remember a similar Lincoln running on the salt a few years back. It was black, and fast.

I have one question - weren't these cars built on a T-Bird chassis of the same vintage?.... my recollection is that they were NOT really as big as they look.

I figure that the aero on a car like this is every bit as good as a Camaro or Firebird of the same vintage.... although I think that the 'stang - at about .41 or .42 is a smaller car and may actually cause a few less horsepower being lost due to the frontal area vis-a-vis the Cd effectively cancelling out the larger frontal area of the Lincoln with the lower Cd number.... with an F class engine, though, it may be more academic than real.

The Lincoln IS a nice looking car!

Neat car, here is a wiki of them. Similar platform to the Tbirds

~92ish to 98: MKVIII, T-Bird and Cougar used the same platform.

I believe the aero is pretty good, my MKVIII could get fantastic hiway mileage!

I do know there was a black MKVii that had a 460 in it a few years back.

explain ????  please.

88-90 Mustangs have a cd of .38  the MKViii at .31 should take less hp to run over 150 mph. Depending on what intake system we use( Carbs, MFI, EFI) the 2.9ltr should be in the range of 375-400hp at 9,000, the turbo engine 750hp at 8,000- 8,500 and that's not running it on "kill".

The N/A engine will will have a 5 speed gear box with 5th being 1:1, the BGC engine will run a 5 speed trans with a slight over-drive ( current line of thinking anyway)

In any instance this year should be an interesting learning experience with the car.

we have lots to get done in the next 70 or so days.......................

A little history I found interesting:
