Quik-Latch hood pins instead of DZUS fasteners?
« on: February 24, 2012, 09:57:28 AM »
Are these legal?  http://www.q-latch.com/index.html

I saw them at PRI this past year and they're very slick, and much easier to use that DZUS fasteners.  Apparently they're NHRA approved and currently in use on Top Fuel cars which reach speeds higher than the Gas Coupe I'm building will ever see.  I've emailed the company to ask about their approval status with the SCTA and ECTA as well, but wanted to check here.

I'd probably use them for the hood, the trunk, and moon disc wheel covers if legal....  maybe windows.

Yes, but I'd want to see them in use before I put a bunch on my car. Top Fuel may be faster than you but you're going to be running a lot longer at speed too.
Also not sure how you'd install for wheel disk use, how large are they?

And price! Ouch, we don't need our panels off that fast to spend that much.......

Point taken on the time spent at speed...

They are pricey... but SO much nicer to use than DZUS Fasteners which can be a pain in the butt sometimes.

They come in different sizes, I've not yet looked to see if they have any that would fit for wheel covers, but I'm hoping they do.  Wanted to check on legality first before trying to fit them to my wheels.

Remember that our safety people need the tools to operate them. Or, they can just use their big axe!

Says they're 1-1/4" diameter -- and look too deep (and big) for some wheel discs.  Also the safety issue of anyone not familiar knowing how to release them on body panels.

Before you get carried away and spend all that money...read the instructions in their ad...read the disclaimer at the bottom. Unless I missed something I have found nothing that says the NHRA has approved them.

I'd question how much salt it would take for them to go from operating real slick to sticking and seizing.  In my limited experience out there it doesn't take long for the salt to find it's way into most everything and start to do it's thing.

The bigger ones are for hoods and decks. The installation instructions has a disclaimer that OEM safety latches "MUST" retained. Besides even though they are stainless da salt will jam'em up quick.

Well, since we aren't running Nascar style pit stops, added to the very spendy price, I'm sticking with Dzus fasteners!

To eliminate most of the problems with dzus fasteners (slippage, scratching, screwdriver abuse, etc)  use these:  <http://www.fullborerace.com/>.

And plan your wire mounting so you only use one length fastener (it can be done, our car uses over 150 to fasten the 13 panels which mount the body).       vic

FYI, I continued to look into this, and worked with the owner of Quik Latch to get some samples in the hands of 'Kiwi' Steve Davies and Lee Kennedy.  Just heard back from Quik Latch end of last week and apparently they've been approved for SCTA use without restriction.  I'll probably run some on the car I'm building for SW2012 and we'll see how they perform out on that salt....

The mini latches are $30 each. I don't know if they have a price for sets of the small ones.

They should make a flush mount.

"...much easier to use that DZUS fasteners."

I don't find turning something 1/4 turn from on to off and vice versa to be too much work. Use Full Bore fastners to save on touch up paint and make them all the same length as Vic suggests.
