Driver Compartment Tech Discussion - coupe
« on: February 14, 2012, 11:31:47 PM »
Land Speed,

I am getting ready to order some items needed for safety shutoffs as per SCTA rules 3.D.3, 3.N. The checklist says I need:

1. Fire- This should be pretty straight forward with the fire system.

2. Fuel- Any advice which vendor and the best way to do this? I am running -6 right now from underneath the vehicle to the engine bay. I am assuming I need to re-route this into the interior with a manual shutoff unless there is something electronic that I can install and operate by a switch in the cockpit. I would love to avoid running fuel into the interior of the car but my google searches did not produce much results.

3. Ignition- I am assuming that I need a emergency shut off in the rear and in the cockpit as well?

4. Parachute Release- This I can order with the parachute system and looks to be pretty straightforward as well.

Any advice on how best to do the fuel and the ignition would be amazing. I would also like some of you to post photos of the cockpit of your car and how you configured the switches so they are easily with in reach with arm restraints on if necessary as well.

Thanks again for all your advice!

Craig

Electric fuel pump in the rear of the vehicle and currently using a stock gas tank. Fuel cell is on the list for later this Spring and it will be in the trunk of the car.

Most of the ford cars use an inertia switch, witch kills the fuel pump power in the event of a hard impact. Most guys an bonneville use those.

Cool I was wondering if you could use those and that they pass tech inspection.

Any other thoughts?

The inertia switch is practically the only shut-off for an electric pump that is legal. I believe their are a couple of off-road companies that make the basic switch. BTW, when you install your fuel cell in the trunk make sure it is completely sealed from the drivers compartment, a .060" minimum fire-wall would be required in that case. See section 3.I page 33 (for the 2012 scta rule book).

Great tip on the fuel cell!

Any thoughts on the power shut off?

You could also go to your Pick -n- Pull and get them for about $5.  They are in the trunk on most 90's Fords with two small bolts attached towards the top on one of the trunk supports.  Tony

You need to have a main electrical shut-off located on the front or the rear of the vehicle. Yes the inertia switch will pass tech.

I was just wondering if you had a rule look yet? If not get one soon. If you do, read it about 20 times then read it some more. Also in the book are people listed for the different classes/catagories for any questions that need clarifying.

You need an EXTERNAL mounted master power shut off that is well marked.

It is between the battery's main feed to the electrical system,,

It does not have to be at the rear, IT MUST be well MARKED and easy to get to.

I use a Moroso unit,,, under $50   Summit Racing, Jegs, Speedway Motors,, everybody has several brands to choose from.

As to routing your fuel line,,

When/Where the Fuel Line passes by the Flex Plate/Fly Wheel area it must go thru HEAVY WALL Tubing.

I used a 24" piece of  1.75 x .250 wall round tube and routed my fuel line thru it,, it was welded to the chassis/frame rail.

The Ford inertia switch is a quick, easy install on just about anything.  I'd suggest the boneyard, and have them get you the pigtail that goes with it -
