What class(s) can a Mazda RX7 run in?
« on: February 04, 2012, 02:13:36 PM »
Previously, I was of the understanding that a Mazda RX7 could only run in the Grand Touring Sport and Modified Sport classes at Bonneville.  Then as I was reading through the 2011 SCTA rule book, I found several sections that seem to indicate that a Mazda RX7 might be able to run in other classes.

Sections 5.D Modified Category and 5.E Production Category both state "...A generic requirement for this category is the car shall have been originally produced with seating for 4 or more people, i.e. adults or children.  If the car was produced and sold with 2 seats on some models and 4 seats (including jump seats) on other models, the car will be classified as a Coupe and Sedan.  Examples include Honda CRX, Ford Mustang GT 350's, Porsche, Nissan Z 2+2, etc."

Additionally, in Section 5.E.3  Grand Touring Sport - /BGT, /GT it states"...Body styles produced with jump seating for more than two people like a Datsun 280Z 2+2, Porsche 911, or Honda CRX even though they may only have two seats will be considered a Coupe and Sedan and must run in that class."

As I have seen pictures of first (1979 - 1985) and second (1986 - 1991) generation Mazda RX7s that had jump seats behind the front seats and that I have found Mazda RX7 jump seats at wrecking yards.   My question is: Does the Mazda RX7 with rear jump seats fit the interpretaion on the generic requirement that was new for the 2011 SCTA rule book?

Don't know. Later Mazda RX7 cars with back doors seem like sedan class cars. Best to get a good answer from Bobby Sykes- drylakes207@yahoo.com -or Jim Miller at- miller212.842@sbcglobal.net- And it looks like I should change my email to 208.287@yahoo.com to be in.

Actually, the RX8 had four doors.

???  First time I noticed it, but owning several Gen 1 and Gen 2 Honda CRXs ( 3 of them new), I don't believe they ever came with a rear seat option at least OEM.  You would have to be less than 3 foot tall to set in the back and you can't move anything downward to fit a seat, cause that is where the fuel tank is located.

Actually like the 2nd gen rx7, the '84 CRX is quite roomie, IMO. We looked at one during the class change for sports cars with seating for 4.

The CRX came with rear seats in Japan and used the same body.

Did the RX-7's with the rear seats have a different body than the 2 seat RX-7's

I know the 280Z had a 2+2 body with 4 seats and a 2 seater body with driver and passenger only. Different roofline.

Actually, there was no change in the roof line or body of the Mazda RX7s that had the rear seats installed.
