Fuel Lines
« on: January 22, 2012, 01:53:21 PM »
Hey Guys and Gals,
Got an important question. I currently run Tygon rubber fuel lines which are a clear yellow color. Have been using it for my dragbike for years. Went on tygon website and printed out entire specs. It says it is made for fuel racing applications, Do I need to contact someone in tech to get this approved or what. Maybe people are using it and I dont know it? Can you help? I do not have room for bulky black rubber hose and dont like it anyway I will be running an A-AF class in 2012. Thanks.

BUB Rule 2.D.  Aero/quip or equipment fire sleeve shall cover all gas/fuel lines and connectors. No plastic gas/fuel petcocks or filters are permitted.
Rules are on BUB website.

And if you think rubber fuel lines are bulky, wait till you get your fire sleeve...

Hey stainless1
Can you direct me as to who has that sleeve material. What nominal thickness is this stuff on 3/8 fuel lines? is it insulated or just thin sleeve and how close to carb inlets and petcock does it have to be. I didnt see in the rules about how much gets covered.Trying to make tech as easy as possible. Thanks

Marty, fire sleeve is usually orange-ish, silicone with ceramic or fiberglass insulation... a #6  is about 5/8 inside and 3/4 to 7/8 outside.  Its purpose is not to make the fuel line fireproof, it adds time before the  fuel line burns through and makes a bigger mess.  It is used on light aircraft and race cars.  Check ebay.

hydraulic hose shops may have a woven fiber
sleeve that is fireproof .

I held a flame under it and it would not burn.

Hey guys,
Went online and found some fire sleeve that is a woven material good to 1200 degrees, not insulated I dont have room for that but woven slip over has a higher burn temp anyway. DOES it need to cover from end to end??? up to clamps?? not a problem with slip over woven material. Thanks

Before you buy something that is not fire sleeve you might want to contact the sanctioning body to see if it meets the requirements for tech.... although I think the auto parts store in Wendover carries it, but you may have to drive back to SLC to find some.

Marty, do you have a link to what your considering? The stuff that has an alum. foil look and is folded over and sewn I have used before. It has never been a problem in tech.   Larry

And just to clarify what they are calling aero-quip is what most of us refer to as braided stainless lines which is legal for use without fire sleeve over it.

Does the stainless steel braid have to be on the outside? BUB doesn't mention braided as being legal.

I don't know if a slip on braided stainless sleeve is suitable, but my braided stainless fuel lines as required for FIM were fine without sleeve ., actually had firesleeve over them and was asked why ;)

The site where I saw fire sleeve material is (www.newlevelmotorsports.com).I cant see why this wont work and it appears to be more fire resistant than the foil and insulated sleeve which shows only 450 degree resistance?? maybe I am not thinking clearly, i just need as much space as possible between my lectron carbs
