Tman, while the tires may work at 60 mph -- the inspectors want written proof - usually a verified speed rating from the manufacturer.  Glen's got the right advice, though -- if you don't/can't get the mfr. data -- talk with the motorcycle tech folks to get some input from them.  We've been in touch with Van Butler on this bike tire issue.

You were talking about a kid a bicycle and did not mention passing any tech :? My answer was based off those criteria

You're correct.  I asked/mentioned inspection for the sake of someone that wants to race such a tire.  It isn't needed (to have a rating)  for Andrew, although I think his grandfather wouldn't be insulted by the tire having some speed rating. :-D

Thanks for the help guys, I followed up on the Avons, I dont think they are being made any anymore? All the tires I found had a production date of 2000? I think the inspectors check age of tire? And thanks for reminding me that MOST bicycles are faster than my bike!

It's all tires rated V, Z, or ZR are date checked, however the H rated tires will still be inspected for condition and signs of aging and any accumulated damage.

Slim
If your grandson's fast bike makes it off paper to the real world make sure he uses sealed metal valve caps. Jon Howard had a flat tire on one of his runs with a plastic cap.
