Belly Tanker at Lands End
« on: January 05, 2012, 09:30:39 AM »
One of my favorite photos from this year was the old belly tanker that was parked off the road at the turn from Lands End.  I have salt fever bad now, of course, and that picture is my computer wallpaper.  I'm dreaming of seeing the salt again!

Can anyone tell me anything about it?

I think they call the turn the Bend in the Road.  Land's End is a few miles east.

Nope, I'm talking about in the other direction.  The Bend is where everyone camps....this was on the salt where the road leaves Land's End and turns toward the racing.  Just out in the middle of nowhere was this awesome old Belly Tanker like a piece of artwork.  When I get home I'll see if I can post the picture here.

That is in fact a new bellytanker. I was in a rush when I finally caught up with him and I can't remember where I put his details.

I first saw it outside the Nugget where there were a few people looking at it and people were saying ..." ahhh, it's just a static display"....I could see what looked to be an alloy bike motor in the back of it , " bullshit it's a static display, that would n't be in there if it was" I thought to myself.....we caught up with him just as he was packing to leave... I had a particular interest in talking to him because I had assembled the parts for something very similar...

From memory he knocked it up in the last few years, took him a week or so of work . He used a Honda 200cc quad bike as a donor and even used the rear end.

"How fast does it go?".... "Well, it does 50 or 60 without too much trouble but the tyres are so out of balance it nearly gets airborne "

here's my brand-spanking new old tank.....

Dr. G:

Perhaps Aussie-talk is different from what I'm used to hearing here.  In discussing the belly tank at the Bend or Land's End or wherever you mention "he knocked it up".  That, in American parlance, would imply his attempts to gain the status of fatherhood, if you know what I mean.

Just sayin. . .

What a great story!  Does she have a name yet?  And why was she parked there all alone?

Knocked up: built, assembled , impregnated or tired ..."I knocked it up myself with basic tools" ..."she was knocked up by 16" ..."he was knocked up by the 200yards"

Knocked down: dismantled

Knock off: copy or steal, or finish.." it was a knocked off design".."he knocked it off from the store." " I'll just knock off this last beer'n I'll be right down there"

Knocked out huh?

F-86 Sabre didn't have tip tanks, looks to be too short & fat for most jet tanks, perhaps a WWII under wing or belly drop tank.

Since we're all taking a crack at it, being steel would date it to late WWII due to the aluminum shortage. I has a fuel filler located that would suggest it is on its side in the pic. My guess would be P47 wing tank. I know where there is a couple simillar to this in aluminum being used as water troughs.
