I dunno what happened to whatever spell-check there was, but - don't think that it's the panacea that you might think.  Spellcheck, first of all, is only as good as the people that wrote the program.  Many of them aren't quite as adept at spelling as the might be, so the "corrected" words might not be right, either.  But more likely -- the words that you see here - and in most other places these days -- aren't spelled incorrectly but rather used incorrectly.  Many folks don't know that "than" is spelled that way - and use "thEn".  Spell check couldn't do anything there -- both are correct spellings, even if different words.  And so is "your/you're", and on and on and on.

That type of correct usage is taught early in school and reinforced by lots of careful reading.  Think of it this way (and here's a word that is often used incorrectly):  Man people these days (and always) are "illiterate".  In today's lexicon that is usually assumed to mean the same as "stupid" or ignorant or such.  Look up the meaning of illiterate -- it means, quite literally, not well-read.  That's not an insult to someone, but rather a simple statement of fact.  To learn lots of words someone must read lots of stuff -- and not just comic books or trade manuals.  If you want a recommendation for a good weekly magazine to read so you can learn lots of fine words (and isn't a teaching tome) - get in touch with me off-Forum.

Well, Jon, yeah, we should all be better at that.  True, spell checking software is not a panacea, and despite cautions, we still make mistakes.

Still, the spell-check function has kept me from looking like a COMPLETE fool more than once, and I do miss it here.

That said, I have a workaround.

Before you post, cut and paste your response into a Word document, and use the spell checking function there.  After it's checked, cut and paste it from the Word document back into the response and post.

I haven't yet learned how to teach the Apple spell checker to accept some of my words, though.  For instance, Maxton won't work.  I remember in Word's SC one could ask it to learn a new word - there's probbly a way to do it in Apple Word, too -- just haven't bothered to try to learn it.
