Ohio Weather
« on: December 19, 2011, 11:36:13 PM »
Joe says:

"We will be running from Northeast to Southwest. "

Here is some good information on weather (specifically wind) in Wilmington:

http://weatherspark.com/averages/30591/Wilmington-Ohio-United-States

Wind
Over the course of the year typical wind speeds vary from 0.0 mph to 17.2 mph (calm to moderate breeze), rarely exceeding 25.2 mph (strong breeze).

The highest average wind speed of 10.3 mph (gentle breeze) occurs around January 10, at which time the average daily maximum wind speed is 16.4 mph (moderate breeze).

The lowest average wind speed of 5.5 mph (light breeze) occurs around August 9, at which time the average daily maximum wind speed is 10.9 mph (gentle breeze).

The wind is most often out of the south (16% of the time), south west (15% of the time), and west (15% of the time).

Speaking of the weather -- Joe Timney reminded me (just a few minutes ago) that it's time to switch the home page weather from Maxton to Wilmington.  Expect to see that done pretty soon.  And thank you, Dan, for giving us that interesting summary of the wind information.  Now - if you could be so kind as to let us know what the winds will be on the 28 - 29 of April - - I'm sure we'd all appreciate it very much.

I can give you averages for April, look here http://weatherspark.com/averages/30591/4/Wilmington-Ohio-United-States
The link above includes temperatures, windspeed and direction, and sunrise sunset information for the month of April.
Specifically, for the month of April:
The wind is most often out of the south (16% of the time), south west (15% of the time), and west (15% of the time).

In the end, the wind will be what it will be.  I was just making an observation that historically at Wilmington the direction will be a head wind.  For us under "100 MPH" racers on naked bikes, it makes a significant difference.  I guess we got spoiled by those occasional gusty tailwinds at Maxton.

I watched a story about the guys that successfully predicted the weather for the D-Day invasion. After their training they were told to never try to predict the weather in the Ohio river valley - you will be wrong!! Hence the local saying, "If you don't like the weather just wait a minute!"

If the weather or wind is too bad there's always the White Castle!  :-o

The direction for travel was chosen because the track goes down hill slightly about 3/8 of a mile into the run. If we start at the other end...you go up hill the whole mile.

Joe if we have a slight down hill run to the finish do we add weight to the rear or the front ?

Right now in full race trim with me in the car the weight balance is
52% rear and 48% front. (seems to work good now with any wind, but I am making down force too)

Hmm maybe the slight down hill will make no differance in weight bias ?

The wind is the wind.  You deal with it.  The wet is more of a concern with me.  A friend in the area says Clinton County is one of the wetest in the state.  I guess you just deal with it also.  We have a place to go race.  Hey, if it is a lot of rain, maybe rain tires and a rain class to pass the time. :-)
