I don't think anybody who ever saw it run will forget the Phoenix.

I've been meaning to scan in some of the pics Kate took of that elegant monstrosity on the salt.  Thanks for the reminder.

The Phoenix is the equal to Goldenrod, Bluebird, or the Pierson Brothers coupe as far as being a "real deal" Bonneville historically significant vehicle.

I was lucky to be the one that timed every run the Phoenix ran. You will never meet a greater bunch of racers. They are missed by all who knew them. A great collection of pictures and the story of two masters of what Bonneville is about.

Ah, some things will last forever - like our memories of the Phoenix.  I remember one day in Smith's Grocery store - and the ladies of the Phoenix crew were in there buying supplies for feeding the crew.  Green shirts, lots of laughing, LOTS of food.  We saw that 285 run - it'll be with me forever.  Thanks for putting up those links.

One of my greatest memories from my first trip to the salt in 02 was watching that thing steam on by our "seats" at the end of the pits!

I forget what year it was but we pitted at the far end next to Noland White and the Phoenix. What one didn't think of, the other one did. Laugh a minute. Great stories, Great fun, Great memories.

Carl had a heart of gold and was most generous.

At the end of the evening of the first Bonneville NW Reunion I was in the banquet room alone.

Carl walked in and asked, "how'd you do?"

I actually had no idea if it sunk or swam.

I told him that.

He reached out to shake my hand and passed me a hundred dollar bill.

He said, " well whatever it was it's different now by a hundred."

That put the event in the black.

It also allowed it to survive because I had told Doris that if it even went under I wouldn't do it again.

Carl actually saved the banquet.

We get that chance again February 18, 2012. That's the next Reunion.

We pitted with the Phoenix and the Joint Venture in '99, over in the northwest corner of the pits.  Great group of guys in both teams.  Wish we could of spent more time getting to know them, but as our first time at Bonneville with our truck(Red Racer Flatout) was a learning curve in progress as they had all experienced before us.  Miss the green team and will remember them forever.  It's was a proud time to attend Bonneville as a member of the "black smoke" group.  Every year we come back as spectators we can still visualize the Phoenix hauling down the course.  What a memory!  There's a guy who has bought our truck and our Pikes Peak truck as well as Georges' trucks and put them in a museum in the midwest, I believe.  I try and find out who he is.
