Roll Cage Question
« on: October 21, 2011, 12:37:42 PM »
Several times in these forums builders have been warned to watch using a kit roll cage in their construction. I was wondering if someone can explain to me what is wrong with using a Jegster 12 point roll cage kit as a starting point..the specifications on the kit are: "12 point roll cages manufactured from 1-5/8'' x .134-wall mild steel tubing" also the funny car roll cage conversion kit lists the same material in its specifications. The 2011 SCTA rule book lists as follows: 3.B1 Roll Cage: Minimum requirements for the cage and structure braces as 1-5/8 in. O.D. round mild steel tubing with a minimum .120 norminal wall thickness. Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to argue with anyone, I would just like someone to give me some facts as to why the kit is not a good starting point. Thank you in advance.

I think you answered your own question Bill
If the cage kit used meets the diameter/material/wall thickness and all other requirements are met (Plates on the floor etc) it should be fine.

I would have used such a kit when building the Merkur but they didn't exist back then.

Go for it!

Of course not official response, but I really don't think this type of query really needs an official response.

as far as cages go.... we've accepted the NHRA spec's, However that might not be legal at Bonneville if you decide to go there later. major difference is the main hoop at bville has to be 1.75" and the floor plates are thicker and bigger on a welded in cage.

There are a couple of minor changes this year as well.. so I'd get a Rule book from each of the venues and build to the highest spec.

thundersalt,

I am not trying to argue with you but I have the 2011 SCTA rule book in front of me and I have not be able to find 1 3/4 O.D. mentioned anywhere in the roll cage requirements..please tell me where it is listed as I don't see it and if I am missing something I would like to know where it is.

Bill,

What kind of car are you wanting to build?

Re-read my post. I am in full agreement with you. I cut and paisted a quote and provided a link of Keith's comment on another forum. It raised my attention to something new none of us know about or he is just wrong.

I'm not going to figure out what's wanted but back a few years ago when ROLL BARS were legal in slower vehicles in the SCTA their minimum was 1.75" .120" wall nominal....Cages were a minimum of 1.625 diameter. 120"............Now stand alone roll bars are no longer legal.................................Good Luck

Roll cage in the Lakewood Cruiser C/MMPU has a Jegs rollcage. He sent them the diminsions and they bent it to his specs. If you dont want to find yourself outside of the cage.

I've been speaking with S&W Racecars about my cage and they're willing to bend my "Lemons Style" chromoly cage 1-5/8" X .095". Does anyone know of a inspection place near Albany/Kingston New York that does cage certifications? Before I pull the trigger and buy the cage I would just like to ask an inspection shop to look over my specs.

So are the main hoops to be 1-3/4" or 1-5/8"?????

You will want to upgrade the standard kit cage to include 1/4 inch plates for the floor mounts from their standard 1/8 inch plates.  Also might need to include some gussets not standard with all kits.  The rule book covers it pretty well.  Also check with Delaware Chassis Works.
