Throw some paint, wheels and an engine and It'll look cool :-D. What are your plans for it?

Talk to a dealer that has old order books for that model. If the roof rack is a extra cost item you should be able to take it off. Have a copy made of the page in their book and put it in your build book.

Sleeper paint job, huge turbo and a run at 200 mph in F/BGC.  You know, the great American dream. :)

Oh holy heck, that's funny stuff right there...

Plan B, Family Truckster paint job, huge turbo, et al...

I know you guys are going to roll with laughter at what you consider my naivety, but I plan to do this on a budget.  My race team and I currently road race in a series for $500 street cars (www.chumpcar.com) and value old fashioned ingenuity and hot rodding over cubic dollars.  We're familiar with the Taurus platform and driveline, have adequate spares.

But most importantly, we're used to showing up with a four door beater at hallowed racing venues. :)

This is us at Road America this past April:

Thus, the Bucket List Bargain Beater is born.

Your $500 budget will be greatly stretched.

LOL!

The original $390 we paid for the Taurus that became our ChumpCar was a tiny drop in the ocean of what the car has become.  But that said, it is grassroots, budget racing and we can do a full 24 hour endurance race for $3,000 plus towing and lodging expenses.  It's a heck of a lot of fun, real racing on real tracks, occasionally even against real drivers that you've heard of.

The F/BGC record is 203 mph, but for some reason the "unblown class" record is only 107 mph.  I think we may take a run in F/GC in 2012, get our feet wet and add the turbo for a step up in 2013.

I have a budget in mind, so feel free to flame away.

Do you guys think it is remotely possible to put a car built from scratch on the salt (for F/CG) for less than $10,000?

This is going to be fun to watch.

Just curious; what are you going to do to make it into a GC?  "Quick-change rear end"??

Can one put a quick change rear end in a FWD vehicle?  :-D

Engine swap will put us into /GC legality.

Rule doesn't require it to be driven, just installed.

What engine you swapping in?

The 3.0 Duratec/ATX in the wagon now is a complete dog.

However, the 3.0 DOHC/MTX from the 1990 Taurus SHO is a completely different animal.

Is that the Yamaha engine that had all the recalls? Neighbor's wife had a SHO, rarely saw it at home. I could however find it in the shop at Galpin Ford.

That's the one.

The engine actually isn't bad... it's the transaxle that is brittle and fragile.
